PGA Tour: 2017 RBC Heritage Preview

Less than one week after the 2017 Masters wrapped up, the PGA Tour shifts to Hilton Head, South Carolina for the RBC Heritage. The late Arnold Palmer won the inaugural RBC Heritage event back in 1969. Almost five decades later, the 49th edition of the tournament will take place at the Harbour Town Golf Links this week. A number of the top golfers in the world will take the week off following the Masters. However, Matt Kuchar, Brandt Snedeker and defending champion Branden Grace will all make the trip to South Carolina to make up a formidable field of competitors.

Event Details

Event: RBC Heritage

Category: PGA

Date: April 13-16

Location: Harbour Town Golf Links, Hilton Head, South Carolina

Grace fired a final-round 66 in the final round of the RBC Heritage last year to pick up his first PGA Tour victory. He went five-under par on the final day to win the tournament at nine-under, to finish just ahead of Luke Donald and Russell Knox. Grace will be motivated to get back in the win column again this weekend. However, he will have some tough competition even with so many of the top names taking the week off.

Past Five Winners

2016: Branden Grace -9

2015: Jim Furyk -18

2014: Matt Kuchar -14

2013: Graeme McDowell -9

2012: Carl Pettersson -14

What To Know About The Course

Grace ranked outside of the top-30 in Driving Distance and outside of the top-50 in Driving Accuracy but still won here in 2016. However, six of the last eight winners have finished inside the top-10 in terms of accuracy from the tee so that should be a statistic to keep in mind this week. Scrambling will be the most important statistic to consider. Grace ranked third in that category a year ago. Jim Furyk and Kevin Kisner finished 1-2 in Scrambling the year before when Furyk beat Kisner in a playoff. It’s also important to keep in mind that Harbour Town is exposed to heavy winds and the weather could impact the tournament outcome. Experience will definitely count for something at the RBC Heritage this week.

The Field

Eight of the world’s top 30 players will make the trip to the Harbour Town Golf Links. Kuchar will be the sports betting favorite to win outright at +1400 odds. Brandt Snedeker is right behind him at +2200 odds, followed by Grace at +2200 odds to win outright. Kevin Kisner, Russell Henley and Martin Kaymer are all in the mix among the sports betting favorites as well this week.

A Good Matchup To Bet: Branden Grace over Kevin Kisner

Grace debuted with a seventh-place finish here in 2015 and then won this tournament a year ago so he is clearly comfortable at Harbour Golf Town Links. Grace has struggled with his consistency at times this season but this will be the perfect opportunity for him to get back on track. Snedeker has finished outside of the top-20 in each of his last two starts and he missed the cut at this tournament a year ago. Snedeker should be a good pick to fade against Grace in the head-to-head sports betting matchup at the RBC Heritage this week.

Top-Five Pick: Adam Hadwin

Hadwin is listed at +2800 odds to win this tournament outright. That is pretty good value for a rising star that is coming off his first PGA Tour win just a few weeks ago. Hadwin won the Valspar Championship then finished sixth at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and 36th at the Masters.

The last four RBC Heritage winners have each trailed by four strokes at some point in the final round so don’t be too concerned if Hadwin has some ground to make up on Sunday. At longer odds than some of the sports betting favorites on the board, Hadwin is an excellent value pick for this week’s RBC Heritage.
