Lionel Messi’s presence at matches continues to draw extreme fan attention, with multiple incidents of spectators breaching security to reach the Inter Miami forward. His first trip to Puerto Rico in February for a preseason friendly against Independiente del Valle produced a widely shared video of several fans forcing their way onto the field. One supporter reached Messi and embraced him before security intervened; a guard tackled the invader and briefly brought Messi down as the fan clung to the player, after which Messi rose and walked away without showing obvious alarm.
Messi has acknowledged the phenomenon. In a 2022 interview with Diario Olé conducted in Spanish, he said pitch invaders are often signs of affection but can create uncomfortable moments and raise concerns about how security might respond when fans approach players aggressively.
Incidents have continued since the Puerto Rico match. Fans interrupted Messi’s first visit to Denver when Inter Miami faced the Colorado Rapids at Empower Field, and another individual broke through security days later at America First Field during the match against Real Salt Lake. Four fans were reportedly arrested on trespassing charges after a breach at BMO Field during Inter Miami’s game against Toronto FC earlier this month.
Hosting Inter Miami has required unusual preparation for some clubs. Real Salt Lake president John Kimball told ESPN that planning for the visit began about eight months in advance because the Messi factor demands special security measures. RSL canceled all season-long credentials for anyone with stadium access for the match and issued single-game passes to better monitor entry. The club also limited access for off-duty employees and considered placing a barrier in the tunnel from the visiting locker room to the field so Inter Miami players could enter without being approached.
The recurring breaches have forced teams and venues to rethink typical game-day logistics when Messi is on the roster, prompting months of coordination with Major League Soccer and Inter Miami and additional game-day staffing to reduce the risk of further incidents.
