Jontay Porter, who received a lifetime ban from the NBA in 2024 for gambling violations and later pleaded guilty to a related federal charge, is now preparing to resume his basketball career in a different setting. Porter is set to play for the SuperHawks in the United States Basketball League (USBL), an upstart professional league that operates independently of the NBA.

Porter’s move marks a significant step in his attempt to continue playing professionally following one of the most severe disciplinary actions in recent NBA history. His lifetime ban stemmed from violations of league rules regarding gambling and the integrity of the game. After the ban, federal authorities pursued a related case in which Porter pleaded guilty; he is currently awaiting sentencing.

Despite his NBA status, Porter is eligible to compete in the USBL because the league is not affiliated with the NBA and is governed by its own rules and leadership structure. The SuperHawks, part of this emerging circuit, are positioning themselves as an alternative professional outlet for players looking to extend or revive their careers outside of the NBA framework.

Porter’s basketball résumé includes a promising profile prior to his disciplinary issues. A skilled big man with shooting range and passing ability, he once projected as a potential long-term contributor at the highest level. His time in the NBA, however, was cut short by the investigation and subsequent findings that led to his permanent disqualification from the league.

The SuperHawks and the USBL see opportunities in adding a player with Porter’s name recognition and experience, even as he remains a controversial figure due to his past violations. His presence is likely to draw attention to the new league, which is aiming to establish competitive credibility and long-term stability in a crowded basketball marketplace.

For Porter, the agreement with the SuperHawks provides a path back to organized professional competition while his legal situation continues to unfold. As he awaits sentencing in federal court, his on-court future will now shift from the NBA spotlight to the developing landscape of the USBL, where he will attempt to rebuild his basketball career within the constraints of his lifetime NBA ban.
