Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua issued a public apology on Thursday after making a gesture during a livestream that has been described as antisemitic. In his statement, Nacua expressed remorse for his actions, clarifying that he was unaware the gesture was offensive or associated with harmful stereotypes about Jewish people.

According to the statement released by the team, Nacua said, “I want to apologize for a gesture I made during a recent livestream. I had no idea that it carried offensive meaning or historical context. I now understand how it was hurtful, and I am truly sorry. This is a learning moment for me, and I am committed to educating myself so that I do not make this kind of mistake again.”

The Rams organization also acknowledged the incident and said they are addressing the matter internally. In a press release, the team stated, “We take these matters seriously and are working with Puka to ensure greater understanding moving forward. We support efforts to promote inclusion and combat hate in all forms.”

The incident drew attention online, with several groups and individuals pointing out the problematic nature of the gesture. In response, both Nacua and the Rams have pledged to engage in further education and outreach, emphasizing that the player did not intend to offend but recognizes the impact of his actions.

Nacua, who is in his rookie season with the Rams, has been a standout on the field but now finds himself facing scrutiny off it. Following his apology, multiple community leaders and advocacy groups have called for this moment to serve as a broader teaching opportunity within professional sports to address and prevent antisemitism and other forms of discrimination.

As the NFL season continues, the Rams and Nacua have indicated their commitment to fostering a respectful and inclusive environment both within the team and throughout the league.
