Rangers All-Star shortstop Corey Seager was out of the lineup for a second straight game Sunday against the Astros because of back spasms, and manager Skip Schumaker said Seager was having an MRI Sunday morning to make sure the issue was limited to spasms.
Schumaker said Seager had shown some improvement Sunday but still did not feel well enough to play. “He was in here before I got here,” Schumaker said. “I got here early, and he was here before me trying to get in the lineup.”
The report says the 32-year-old is in a career-worst 0-for-27 slump. Seager did not play Friday night in a 2-0 loss to the Astros, but Schumaker said that was a scheduled off day and that Saturday morning was the first time Seager experienced any back issues.
Per the report, Seager is batting .179 with seven homers and 20 RBIs in 42 games this season. The MRI was ordered to confirm the cause of the problem and to determine whether the situation is limited to spasms, Schumaker said.
Schumaker’s comments indicated the team was taking a cautious approach while assessing Seager’s condition. The report does not provide further medical details beyond the MRI being performed Sunday morning and the manager’s assessment that Seager had improved but remained unavailable to play.
