The Tampa Bay Rays are exploring a potential new location for a future ballpark in Hillsborough County. On Tuesday, the Hillsborough College board of trustees unanimously approved a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the team. The agreement allows the Rays to begin evaluating the viability of a stadium project on college-owned land.

While the MOU does not establish a formal commitment, it represents an initial collaboration that could evolve into a site plan for a new home for the Major League Baseball franchise. The property under consideration is believed to offer strategic advantages, including proximity to Tampa’s urban core, road access, and potential for shared educational and community usage.

The Rays’ current lease at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg is set to expire in 2027. With that end date approaching, the organization is actively exploring alternatives to ensure a long-term home that aligns with both fan accessibility and business operations. The MOU allows the Rays permission to conduct due diligence on the designated site, which could include feasibility studies, community engagement, and additional planning.

According to Hillsborough College officials, the agreement outlines a framework for dialogue rather than a final development decision. It enables both parties to assess potential benefits and impacts—ranging from economic development to educational partnerships—that may result from locating a ballpark at or near the college campus.

In past years, the Rays have investigated multiple stadium proposals on both sides of Tampa Bay. The team’s history of stadium discussions includes proposed sites in Ybor City, as well as redevelopment plans for its current St. Petersburg location. The team’s latest move suggests a continued focus on Hillsborough County as a possible long-term solution.

Further steps in the process are expected to include public input, coordination with local and state agencies, and evaluation of transportation and infrastructure needs. No specific stadium designs, funding models, or timelines have been publicly announced at this stage.

The Rays have emphasized that maintaining strong community ties and ensuring fan access will be key components in any stadium decision. The team continues to evaluate all options as it looks to secure its future in the Tampa Bay region.
