Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso confirmed that the club will evaluate Kylian Mbappé’s fitness before making a decision on his participation in the upcoming Supercopa de España final against Barcelona. The French forward is recovering from a knee sprain and remains a doubt heading into Sunday’s highly anticipated clash.

Mbappé, who joined Real Madrid ahead of the current season, has quickly become a key figure in the squad. However, the knee injury he suffered has limited his involvement in recent matches, and the coaching staff is approaching his potential return with caution.

“We will assess the risk,” said Alonso during a press conference. “Kylian is progressing well and working hard with the medical team. We still have a couple of training sessions, and we’ll use that time to monitor his condition and make the right decision.”

Alonso emphasized that player health is the top priority, especially in a high-stakes, high-intensity environment like the Supercopa final. “We want him available, of course, but not at the expense of his long-term wellbeing or the rest of the season,” he added.

Should Mbappé be unavailable, Real Madrid has other options in attack, including Vinícius Júnior and Rodrygo, who have both featured prominently this season. Midfielder Jude Bellingham has also contributed significantly to the team’s offensive output.

Barcelona is expected to field a strong lineup as well, making the final a showcase of two of Spanish football’s top sides. The Supercopa de España, typically contested by the winners and runners-up of the previous season’s La Liga and Copa del Rey competitions, provides both clubs an opportunity to secure early-season silverware.

Madrid advanced to the final after a combative semifinal, while Barcelona also impressed in their path. As both teams prepare for the showdown, the focus remains on key player fitness and tactical preparation.

The final takes place Sunday, with kickoff scheduled at a neutral venue. All eyes will be on Alonso’s lineup decisions — particularly whether Mbappé makes a return to action.
