The San Jose Earthquakes suffered their second loss of the season on Saturday afternoon but the game had to be considered a success for MLS fantasy managers that own Chris Wondolowski.
After his stellar performance, his owners watched him move in to a tie among the league leaders with his third goal of the season. He’s just one of the many highlights in terms of fantasy from this week’s action:
Kelyn Rowe – M (New England Revolution)
Wondolowski moved in to a tie for the league lead in goals but it was Rowe that stole the spotlight when he scored both of New England’s goals in their 2-1 win over San Jose. Rowe’s two goals were the difference in the Revolution finally securing the maximum three points in the game and he could have had more with an incredible five shots on target in the game. It’s no surprise he led all fantasy performers for week four with an amazing 34 points from the midfield position. Next up for Rowe and the Revolution is a Week 5 matchup with the Colorado Rapids, who have yet to win a game this season.
Kaka – M (Orlando City SC)
The Brazilian midfielder helped Orlando City SC earn at least a point for the third time in four games with one of their two goals in the match. The fact that he had two shots on goal, an assist and three corners won is testament to his dominance. Kaka leads the MLS with 15 shots on target through his first four MLS games, which means he’s been worth every penny paid for him so far. Only Rowe had more fantasy points than Orlando City’s main man in the midfield for the week four slate. Remember that Orlando City plays a bit early this week with the Friday contest against D.C. United.
Ike Opara – D (Sporting Kansas City)
Sporting Kansas City earned its first victory of the season with a 1-0 win over New York City FC and Opara’s play on the back line was a big part of it. Opara converted a cross from skipper Matt Besler for the game’s only goal in the 13th minute but his production didn’t end there by any means as he went on to record a ridiculous nine intercepted passes. Factor in two blocked shots and the extra points he received for SKC’s clean sheet, and Opara was easily the top fantasy defender for Week 4. Sporting KC has allowed just four goals in four games so far this season.
Chris Wondolowski – F (San Jose Earthquakes)
The Earthquakes might not have been able to brave the blistery New England conditions but Wondolowski was called to the spot for a San Jose penalty kick in the second half and he capitalized on the opportunity with his third goal of the season. Wondolowski also pitched in with three shots on target and three successful tackles to lead all strikers with 19 fantasy points for week four.
Bill Hamid – G (DC United)
Hamid stood out as the top fantasy goaltender for week four thanks to his five saves and a clean sheet that helped DC United secure a 1-0 win over the defending MLS champion LA Galaxy. Most fantasy owners would have opted against the matchup – especially considering he allowed two goals against the New York Red Bulls the week before – but Hamid shined through as one of this week’s surprise performers.
Fanendo Adi – F (Portland Timbers)
The Timbers didn’t look particularly good in their 2-1 loss to the Vancouver Whitecaps but Adi stood out as one of the top forward options for week four with a goal and two shots on target in the loss. Portland fell to 0-1-3 on the season but Adi has been among the few bright spots as this week marked the third time in four games that he registered at least 10 points in a game as he finished with 20.
