Redskins News: Team Declines to Pay Trent Williams His Remaining Salary

Add even more drama to the Trent Williams-Redskins saga. After being placed on the Non-Football Injury list on Thursday, Williams was informed on Friday that he would not be paid the remaining $5.1 million of his salary for this season, ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Field Yates first reported

This was the latest chapter in the ongoing tension between Williams and Washington, stemming from his distrust of the team’s medical staff and perceived lack of care for his well-being. Williams revealed that he was diagnosed with cancer after team doctors originally told him a growth on his head was just a cyst.

Williams told ESPN that he wouldn’t have spoken out about the medical staff if Washington would have simply traded him at the deadline. The team has shopped Williams, but were reported to have been looking for young playmakers such as Browns cornerback Denzel Ward instead of draft picks.

According to ESPN, Washington’s decision to not pay Williams his remaining salary stems from the team feeling disrespected and smeared by their left tackle, without being given a proper chance to respond to his claims.

Regardless, it is clear as day that the best move for both parties is to move on from each other this offseason. Williams is under contract through the 2020 season, unless the Redskins try to challenge him getting credit for this season. Either way, a trade this offseason is the most likely scenario.
