Why Rex Ryan Should Be Fired Sooner Rather Than Later

Rex Ryan has had his worst season to date as head coach of the Jets.

One truly has to wonder if New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan has incriminating pictures of team owner Woody Johnson that he is holding on to as ransom to keep his job. Ryan remains head coach of the Jets despite a 2-9 record and the guarantee of a fifth consecutive non-winning season, which would be grounds for firing of any other coach on any other team. Ryan and his buffoonery have turned New York’s AFC franchise into a laughingstock.

Unparalleled Mismanagement

The Jets will enter Monday night’s game at Miami with a two-game losing streak and with nine losses in their last 10 games. Ever since his arrival in 2009 Ryan’s cultural formula with the Jets has been a strong defense, power running game, and ineptitude at the quarterback position.

At first, Ryan got away with the poor QB play and had success as he led the Jets to the AFC Championship Game in 2009 and 2010. But that success may have had a long term adverse effect both on the Jets and Ryan as it prevented a more serious look at fixing the deficiencies on offense.

Ryan’s Hot Air

Ryan seemingly became full of himself after those first two years on the job as he and the Jets were featured on HBO’s Hard Knocks program during training camp of 2011. Ryan’s profane rants coupled with his promise of a Super Bowl run turned off a lot of fans and NFL commentators and served to fuel opponents with extra motivation. The Jets limped home with an 8-8 finish and have never been the same since.

Discredited Disgrace

The Jets misery is not all on Ryan, however, as Johnson has allowed this clown show to continue far beyond the point that any other owner would tolerate. Ryan’s lack of professionalism and incompetence at fielding a respectable offense has doomed this franchise that still must cling to Super Bowl III as its one moment of significant glory.

Thrusting unprepared rookie Geno Smith into the starting QB job last year and then pulling him for the washed up Michael Vick, only to rename Smith the starter epitomizes the incompetent circus show that is known as Rex Ryan and the New York Jets.
