South Africa captain Ronwen Williams praised 20-year-old Mbekezeli Mbokazi for his influence in the national team, saying the Chicago Fire defender is already emerging as a leader despite his age. Mbokazi, playing in his first FIFA World Cup, moved to MLS in December after a breakout season with Orlando Pirates and was one of the standouts in Major League Soccer in 2026.
Williams described Mbokazi as a rare talent and highlighted his aggression and drive from the opening match in Mexico. The captain said the youngster lifts the group’s intensity, often urging teammates on even late in games, and called him a born leader and natural defender.
Against Mexico in the World Cup opener at Estadio Azteca, South Africa were outshot 16-3 and fell 2-0, but Mbokazi registered four clearances and two key tackles while taking a proactive role organising the back line. Williams noted the team’s multilingual communication, saying it helps the defensive unit and that everyone understands one another on the pitch.
Head coach Hugo Broos, who has worked with Mbokazi at the Africa Cup of Nations and in World Cup camp, praised his progress and physical presence. Broos said he first noticed the youngster at Orlando Pirates and considers him a model of the modern player, though he stressed Mbokazi is still learning and will develop into an even stronger leader.
Broos also expressed frustration that Mbokazi chose a move to the United States rather than waiting for a transfer to Europe, believing European challenges could accelerate his development. South Africa now face Czechia in Atlanta on Thursday with Williams and Mbokazi charged with keeping a clean sheet; their final Group A match is against South Korea in Guadalupe on June 24 as Bafana aim to reach the knockout stage for the first time in their history.
