Salido vs Roman Odds and More – Saturday HBO Boxing

Salido vs Roman Odds

Salido vs Roman Odds – This Saturday night sees HBO Boxing coming to us live from Las Vegas with the Orlando Salido vs Miguel Roman 130 pound showdown in the main event spot.

There are no titles on the line between Salido (44-13-4) and Roman (57-12) but a slugfest is thought to be brewing. Both men have reputations as crowd pleasers and both continue to compete at a very high level despite their advanced number of fights. In the case of Salido, he is almost always in a fight of the year candidate and in this fight he ha a dance partner who is up to the challenge. Salido was asked to do a rematch with WBO world champion Vasyl Lomachenko, whom he beat in March of 2014. Perhaps wisely, Salido settled for the prospective war with Roman. Roman has a ton of fights and it bears noting that he is 19-1 in his last twenty appearances. His only recent loss came at the hands of Japan’s Takashi Miura this past January, but he bounced back with a win in June.

Francisco “El Bandido” Vargas (23-1-2) is facing England’s Stephen Smith (25-3). Vargas is a former world champion, but with a loss and a draw in his last two outings, he has not won since 2015. The loss came in January of this year to Miguel Berchelt and it cost him his WBC world title so Vargas is in need of a stand-out performance. The 32 year old Smith is looking for his second win of 2017 as he looks to work his way to a title shot again. His three career losses all came in title fights, as he lost a British level title bout to Lee Selby in 2011 and 2016 saw him go 0-2 in world title fights.

Philadelphian Tevin Farmer (25-4-1) looks to complete his feel good story this weekend as he faces Japan’s Kenichi Ogawa (22-1) for the vacant IBF world title. Farmer started off his pro career an unimpressive 7-4-1 but he has reeled off 17 straight wins to force his way into the title picture. Farmer is blessed with a lot of physical tools and in Ogawa, he looks to have the right opponent in front of him to shine. Though he could surprise with his resiliency and toughness there is nothing on Ogawa’s resume close to the world title level. He is armed with a big punch, sporting 17 KOs in his 22 wins but he is in for a long day against the highly technical Farmer if that is all he has.

Dropping down to the super featherweight class is former lightweight world title contender Denis Shafikov (38-3-1). The rugged Russian is 2-2 in his last four fights with both losses coming in world title fights. Alvarado is a trial horse whose last loss came to Yuriokis Gamboa at the start of 2017. He as won three fights since then, including a win over previously undefeated Roger Gutierrez on Golden Boy’s LA Fight CLub card from July 14th. Shafikov is testing the waters in the weight class here after years at 135 pounds. If he cannot get by Alvarado then he will not be a factor in the title picture at 130 pounds.
