San Diego Padres at Arizona Diamondbacks Free Preview 07/06/18

The San Diego Padres will be squaring off against their divisional rival Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field. The matchup will begin at 9:40 p.m. ET and fans looking to watch it can tune in to Fox Sports Arizona.

San Diego Padres vs. Arizona Diamondbacks Odds

Oddsmakers are listing Arizona (-135) as the favorite over San Diego (+125). Bettors can wager on the game’s total with odds sitting at -115 for over eight runs and -105 for under eight. Runline odds stand at -170 for betting the Padres +1.5 runs and +150 for the Diamondbacks -1.5.

The Padres are just 38-51 SU and are 41-47 against the spread (ATS). They’ve lost 5.8 units for moneyline bettors and 21.4 units ATS. San Diego’s covered the spread only once over its last seven games and the total has gone under in four of those seven. The Diamondbacks, on the other hand, are 48-40 SU and 45-42 ATS. The team’s gained 7.2 units for bettors taking the moneyline and 7.0 units ATS. Arizona has covered the spread just twice over its last seven games and the under has cashed in four of those seven.

The left-handed Joey Lucchesi is the probable starter for San Diego. Lucchesi (4-3, 3.26 ERA) has recorded 60 strikeouts in 57 innings so far. He’s 0-1 with four strikeouts and a 7.20 ERA against Arizona this year.

The Diamondbacks are putting the ball in the hands of righty Zack Godley (9-6, 5.07 ERA), who has 92 strikeouts and 50 walks, as well as a WHIP of 1.60. Godley is 1-0 with eight strikeouts and a 3.38 ERA in one start against San Diego this year.

As a unit, Arizona’s pitching staff has given up 3.8 runs per game overall in 2018. Its starters have an ERA of 4.09, a WHIP of 1.27 and a strikeouts-per-nine of 9.1. The bullpen has recorded a solid ERA of just 2.57, a WHIP of 1.16 and a K/9 of 7.8. In 34 games against NL West opponents, Diamondbacks starters have an ERA of 4.02 and the bullpen’s ERA is 3.08.

Arizona’s hitters have put up 4.3 runs per contest, including 4.7 per game against divisional foes and 4.0 per game over their last five. The team’s hit .278/.351/.391 over its last five matchups and is 1-4 SU during that span.

The Diamondbacks’ hitters have been led by outfielder David Peralta and first baseman Paul Goldschmidt. Peralta is hitting .284/.348/.505 with 15 home runs, 46 RBIs and 38 runs scored, and Goldschmidt’s line sits at .270/.380/.525 with 19 homers, 48 RBIs and 58 runs.

In the other dugout, San Diego’s pitching staff allowed 4.5 runs per game and its starters own a 4.60 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 7.66 K/9. The bullpen has an ERA of 3.53, along with a K-per-9 of 9.52.

The Padres offense has slashed .234/.300/.367 on its way to 3.7 runs scored per game this season, including 3.9 runs per game against divisional foes and 3.8 per game over the team’s last five contests (2-3 SU).

First baseman Eric Hosmer and left fielder Jose Pirela continue to lead San Diego’s offense. Hosmer is slashing .264/.339/.417 with nine home runs, 37 RBIs and 38 runs scored, while Pirela is hitting .260/.310/.348 with two homers, 25 RBIs and 43 runs scored.

The Padres have gained 1.8 units and are 32-29 ATS when facing a righty starter this season. The over has cashed in 25 of those games, compared to 33 that’ve gone under against right-handed starting pitchers. On the other hand, the Diamondbacks have netted 7.8 units and are 15-14 ATS when facing a left-handed starting pitcher. The over’s hit in 13 of those games, as opposed to 13 which went under the total.
