San Francisco 49ers at Kansas City Chiefs Betting Preview

In this Sunday game, Kansas City is tabbed as the favorite and the team’s currently giving up 6 points. The 49ers are also receiving +190 moneyline odds while the Chiefs are -230. Oddsmakers have determined the over/under (O/U) to be 55.5 points, and if one team can find paydirt early, it’ll probably create a nice in-game betting opportunity.

The early action has shifted to both the Chiefs and the over. The line originally opened at -4 and the over/under was initially 54.5.

The 49ers are 0-2 against the spread (ATS) and have recorded 0.0 units so far. The team has recorded an Over-Under mark of 1-1. The Chiefs are up 2.9 units this season. The team is 2-0 ATS and owns an O/U record of 2-0.

The 49ers have gone 1-1 straight up (SU) in 2018 while the Chiefs are 2-0 SU.

The 49ers just recorded a 30-27 victory over Detroit in Week 2. The passing attack was on point as Jimmy Garoppolo completed 18 passes for 206 yards and two touchdowns. Alfred Morris (only 48 yards on 14 rush attempts) and Matt Breida (138 yards on 11 carries, one TD) led the ground attack while Pierre Garcon (four receptions, 57 yards) and Breida (three catches, 21 yards) handled the receiving duties in the win.

Kansas City just earned a 42-37 win over Pittsburgh in Week 2. Patrick Mahomes completed 23-of-28 passes for 326 yards and six touchdowns. Kareem Hunt (75 rushing yards on 18 attempts) led the running game as Travis Kelce (seven receptions, 109 yards, two TDs) and Sammy Watkins (six catches, 100 yards) led the pass-catching corps in the win.

Looking at offensive play-calling, each squad has a similar run-pass ratio on the season. San Francisco has run the ball on 47.3 percent of its offensive possessions while Kansas City has an overall rush percentage of 48.6. The 49ers have rushed for 140 yards per game and have only one score on the ground this year. The Chiefs are totaling 117 rush yards per game and have yet to record a rushing TD.

It appears that the 49ers may have an advantage in all aspects of the ground game. Their backfield has logged 5.3 yards per carry while their defense is allowing 4.3 YPC to opponents. The Chiefs have rushed for 4.5 yards per carry and allowed 4.5 yards per rush attempt to opponents.

The Niners offensive scheme has tallied 234 yards per game in the air overall and has three passing score so far. The Chiefs have recorded 291 pass yards per contest and have 10 total pass TD.

San Francisco appears to have an advantage when it comes to limiting the pass. The team has allowed opponents to run for an average of 107 yards and pass for 296 yards per game. The Kansas City defense has given up 438.0 yards per game to opposing passers and 78.0 yards per game to opposing runners. The Niners are allowing an adjusted net yards per pass attempt (ANY/A) of 6.98 to opposing QBs, while the Chiefs have given up an 8.27 ANY/A.

Offensively, Garoppolo is up to 206 passing yards this season, and has connected on 69 percent of his 26 attempts with two passing scores and has yet to throw an interception. Garoppolo has a 6.13 adjusted net yards per pass attempt, including 4.68 over the last two outings.

We’re looking for 49ers to control the clock by putting the ball in the hands of their running backs. Matt Breida (138 rush yards, one rush TD) and Alfred Morris (48 rush yards, 32 receiving yards) have been focal points in the offensive scheme for San Francisco.

On the other sideline, Patrick Mahomes has completed 23-of-28 passes for 326 yards, six TDs and zero INTs. Mahomes’ ANY/A sits at 15.24 for the season and 13.65 over his past two games.

The Chiefs also prefer to keep their RBs involved. In addition to Tyreek Hill (90 receiving yards, one receiving TD), Sammy Watkins (31 rush yards, 100 receiving yards) and Kareem Hunt (75 rush yards, one TD) have gotten plenty of action recently.
