The San Jose Earthquakes have officially announced the signing of forward Timo Werner from German club RB Leipzig. The agreement brings the German international to Major League Soccer as a designated player on a contract running through the 2028 season.

The acquisition of Werner marks a significant addition to the Earthquakes roster. The 27-year-old forward brings with him years of experience at the top levels of European football, including notable stints with RB Leipzig and Chelsea FC in the Premier League. Known for his pace, movement, and goal-scoring ability, Werner has also accumulated numerous caps with the German national team, participating in major tournaments such as the UEFA European Championship and the FIFA World Cup.

San Jose’s decision to invest in Werner reflects the club’s aspirations to elevate its competitive standing in Major League Soccer. Werner’s arrival is expected to bolster the Quakes’ attacking options and bring versatility to their front line. With the ability to play both centrally and out wide, his presence gives head coach and technical staff increased tactical flexibility.

Although specific terms of the transfer were not disclosed, bringing Werner in as a designated player indicates a substantial financial commitment. Under MLS rules, designated players are those whose compensation exceeds the league maximum salary budget charge, allowing clubs to acquire high-profile talents while staying within league guidelines.

Werner began his professional career with VfB Stuttgart before moving to RB Leipzig, where he became the club’s all-time leading scorer. His performance in the Bundesliga earned him a transfer to Chelsea FC in 2020, where he was part of the squad that won the UEFA Champions League in 2021. He returned to Leipzig in 2022 before completing his move to the United States in 2026.

The Earthquakes are preparing for the upcoming MLS season and will look to integrate Werner into the squad during preseason training. His adaptation to the league and contribution on the field will be closely watched by fans and analysts alike as San Jose aims to make a strong push in the Western Conference.
