Troy Babbitt-USA TODAY Sports

Two clubs that split their season series one win each last year, the San Jose Sharks and the Philadelphia Flyers face off at the Wells Fargo Center for a cross-country tilt. The action will get started at 7 p.m. ET on Tuesday, October 9, and it’s being televised live on NBC Sports Network.

San Jose Sharks at Philadelphia Flyers Odds

San Jose heads into the matchup as the favorite with a -120 moneyline. The line for Philadelphia sits at +100, and the oddsmakers have set the Over/Under (O/U) at an even 6 goals. The line for betting the total stands at -125 under, +105 over.

The Flyers are 1-1 straight up (SU) and have netted 0.5 units for moneyline bettors this season. That early-season winning percentage is a regression from the 42-40 record that the team posted during the 2017-18 season campaign.

Philadelphia’s successfully connected on 14.3 percent of its power play chances in 2018-19. That’s a significant drop-off from last season, when the team was ranked 17th in the league by scoring on 19.9 percent of its extra-man advantages. Its penalty kill has improved nicely year-over-year as the team’s gone from successfully defending 76.3 percent of opponents’ power plays (ranked 26th overall last season) to 85.7 percent this year.

Philadelphia, as a collective unit, has been called for penalties 5.0 times per game this season, a number that has climbed from last year’s 3.6 penalties per game the team gave up. After serving an average of 8.6 penalty minutes per game a year ago, the team has had to kill penalties for 10.0 minutes per outing this season.

Averaging 26.5 saves per game with a .898 save percentage, Brian Elliott (one win, one loss) has been the best goalkeeper for the Flyers this year.

On the other bench, San Jose is 1-2 straight up (SU) and has lost 0.9 units for moneyline bettors thus far. Through three regular season outings, one of its games have gone over the total, while an additional one has gone under the total and none have pushed. As a road team so far, San Jose is 1-1 SU.

San Jose’s scored on 0.0 percent of its power play chances this year after successfully converting on 21.1 percent of its extra-man opportunities in 2017-18 (a mark that was just better than the league average). The team’s gone from killing off 84.2 percent of opponents’ power plays (ranked second overall last season) to 75.0 percent this year.

San Jose’s players have been penalized 4.0 times per game this season, a number that’s up some over the 3.4 penalties per game given up last year. After serving an average of 8.3 penalty minutes per game a season ago the team’s had to kill penalties for 8.0 minutes per matchup this year.

Martin Jones (18.3 saves per game) has been the main choice in the net for San Jose. Jones owns a 1-2 record, while registering a .859 save percentage and 3.03 goals against average this year.

Leading the offensive counter for the visiting Sharks will be Evander Kane (two goals, zero assists) and Justin Braun (zero goals, one assist).
