Scherzer was scheduled for an MRI due to left-side painScherzer was scheduled for an MRI due to left-side pain

Max Scherzer abandoned his start against the Cardinals in the sixth inning due to pain in his left side after being hit by a pitch. Scherzer walked off the Citi Field mound with the assistance of a trainer, and although he could only conjecture about the severity of his injuries, he is hopeful that he acted in time to avert the worst. Scherzer will have an MRI on Thursday morning in order to obtain a revised prognosis and timetable.

After the Mets’ 11-4 win over the Cardinals, he stated, “I don’t think this is a severe strain.” “I felt rather tense, and then all of a sudden it disappeared. However, I do not feel like I ripped it. I felt like it just kind of grew worse. Hopefully, I was able to escape quickly enough to avoid serious harm. I am aware that obliques and intercostals can be unpleasant. Fortunately, I escaped major harm.”

Showalter compared the current scenario to the closing days of Spring Training, when Scherzer withdrew from his last Grapefruit League start due to a strained right hamstring. He ultimately recovered in time to start the second game of the season, one day after he normally would have. Scherzer also withdrew from Game 6 of the National League Championship Series last season due to an “overcooked” right arm, and he has previously exited starts due to groin and neck ailments.
