Seattle Seahawks running back Zach Charbonnet will not return for the remainder of the NFL postseason due to a knee injury that will require season-ending surgery, head coach Mike Macdonald confirmed on Monday. Charbonnet sustained the injury during the Seahawks’ recent playoff game on Saturday.

The team has not released the specifics of the injury, but the severity is such that medical staff and team officials determined surgery was necessary, ending Charbonnet’s campaign prematurely. The rookie running back had been a key contributor in Seattle’s offense throughout the season, providing depth and versatility in the backfield.

Charbonnet, who was selected by the Seahawks in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft, had been splitting carries with veteran Kenneth Walker III. Over the course of the regular season, he showed promise both as a physical runner and as a reliable receiver out of the backfield. His ability to contribute on all three downs allowed the Seahawks to rotate backs more effectively and manage workloads.

With Charbonnet now sidelined, the Seahawks will need to adjust their offensive strategy for the remainder of their playoff run. Kenneth Walker III is likely to take on a larger role, while players further down the depth chart may see increased responsibilities. The coaching staff will need to determine how best to compensate for the loss of Charbonnet’s dual-threat capabilities.

This injury marks a tough break for Charbonnet, who had been progressing well in his first NFL season. It also adds a challenge for a Seahawks team aiming to make a deep playoff push. Team officials have not indicated a timetable for Charbonnet’s recovery beyond stating that the injury will keep him out for the rest of the postseason.

Further updates on Charbonnet’s condition and his recovery process will likely become available following his surgery. For now, the Seahawks will look to regroup and focus on their next playoff matchup without one of their key offensive pieces.
