PHILADELPHIA — Sean Mannion has been hired as Philadelphia’s offensive coordinator and is charged with overseeing a significant schematic overhaul of the Nick Sirianni/Jalen Hurts era after Kevin Patullo was fired at season’s end, sources said. The Eagles initially targeted more experienced candidates such as Brian Daboll and Mike McDaniel but pivoted once those coaches landed elsewhere.

Left tackle Jordan Mailata offered an enthusiastic early appraisal, calling Mannion “an evil genius” and saying, “The guy knows ball.” Mailata added that Mannion stands out for football intelligence and expects the staff and players to showcase his ideas over the coming year.

Mannion’s coaching resume is short. The former Oregon State quarterback played professional football as recently as 2023, joined the Packers’ staff in 2024 as an offensive assistant and was promoted to quarterbacks coach last year, where he aided the development of Jordan Love and Malik Willis, according to the team. Dolphins head coach and former Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley praised Mannion as “one of the hardest workers” at a young age and noted his playing experience and coaching focus.

Mannion interviewed with Philadelphia virtually while at the East-West Shrine Game and followed with an in-person meeting he described as “even more validating.” Like Sirianni and Hurts, Mannion is a coach’s son; he accompanied his father, John Mannion, scouting high school teams as a child and kept a notepad that his father later framed and gave him when he was hired by the Packers.

Sources say Mannion is installing an offense in the Kyle Shanahan/Sean McVay mold with more under-center work and pre-snap motion, elements the Eagles have used less in recent seasons in part because Hurts has shown resistance. A team source believes Hurts “is as open as he has ever been to change,” and Hurts called the process with Mannion “very enjoyable,” saying Mannion is clear, instructive and able to answer his questions. Mannion called Hurts “accurate,” a great athlete and “hungry” to learn; the hire makes Mannion Hurts’ sixth playcaller since 2020.
