Severino Hits Three Homers, Marlins Score 11 … In One Inning

Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

The best teams in baseball get plenty of mention in this space and others: It’s a regular rotation of Dodgers, Yankees, Red Sox, Astros, Phillies and Twins (yes, the Twins). But Tuesday night was one for the struggling teams. The Orioles catcher had a huge night and the team won a crazy game in Texas. The Marlins put up 16 runs (11 in one inning!). The Tigers beat the surprising Rays. And the Giants won a big game for their skipper. Elsewhere in diamond sports, the NCAA softball championship was one for the ages.

Pedro Severino was the star for the Orioles on Tuesday night with three homers. The last one seemed meaningless in a blowout in the ninth inning, but Baltimore ended up needing it in a 12-11 win.

The Marlins didn’t need to bite any nails, not after an 11-run inning against a pretty good Brewers team.

The Tigers told Miguel Cabrera on Tuesday that he’d be a full-time designated hitter. He wasn’t happy but responded with a grand slam in a rare big win for Detroit.

The Giants also don’t seem like a contender, but they got a very meaningful victory for their beloved manager, Bruce Bochy.

It’s not Major League Baseball, but fans everywhere will appreciate the ending to the NCAA softball championship. UCLA was one out away before Oklahoma hit a game-tying home run, but the Bruins found a way to walk it off anyway.
