Sonnen vs Vieira Odds

Sonnen vs Vieira Odds For ADCC 2017 – The Abu Dhabi Combat Club’s 13th Submission Wrestling World Championships is set for Helsinki, Finland on Spetember 23rd and 24th. As always, the two-day event will feature 16-man, single-elimination tournaments in 5 different weight classes, as well as several superfights, are on the schedule.

Former UFC star Chael Sonnen returns to action as he takes on Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt Leo Vieira in one of the superfights. Sonnen is back mainly because of his name recognition and he was originally scheduled to face former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir, but Mir was recently scratched and replaced by Vieira. The Sonnen-Mir match was a moderately compelling fight in that it pitted two UFC stars under a different format and Vieira will make for a totally different encounter.

Mir is bigger than Sonnen and Vieira will be roughly six inches shorter. That fact alone would affect an athlete in serious preparation, but that is not what Sonnen does. Sonnen lives off his reputation and attitude and when he says “I will fight anyone” you don’t really question him. What goes without saying is that in many cases, Sonnen is OK with showing up and taking an “L.”

In Vieira, he is getting a ground fighting expert who has a long history with the ADCC competition. Vieira won the under 66 KG weight class in 2003 and in 2005, effectively taking the torch from the great Royler Gracie. He has continued to compete in the ADCC throughout the years and he scored second place finishes in 2007 and 2011 as well.

Vieira is now 41 years old, and that could be a major factor here. Vieira always counted on his speed and precision when he was at the top of his game and he has ceded the top spot to younger fighters.

Sonnen has been a wrestler his whole life which means that in the ADCC format he will likely be working from top position, posturing in Vieira’s guard. Vieira will try for a point scoring sweep or a submission from the guard, and he is very capable of pulling that off. Sonnen is strong enough to stay safe in the early going but he has been known to tire and when he tires he makes a lot of mistakes.

That is what it is going to come down to – will Vieira tire throwing the kitchen sink at the bigger, stronger Sonnen or will Chael gas out in the later stages of the fight? One thing that would be interesting is to see some type of over/under on this one. The ADCC format forces overtime periods until points are scored, so this could turn into a stalemate of tired fighters.

The ADCC “Superfight Champion” is currently Andres Galvao, who won the open weight tournament in 2011 and defended the mystical title in 2013 and 2015. This year he faces 2015 open weight tournament winner Claudio Calasansin in the events principal superfight.
