Southampton were expelled from the Championship playoffs after admitting to watching opposition training sessions in the build-up to three matches this season, a May 19 announcement confirmed. The expulsion is subject to appeal.
The controversy, dubbed ‘Spygate’, erupted after an individual, described in reports as a Southampton staff member, was photographed filming Middlesbrough from a vantage point near a local golf club ahead of the first leg of the playoff semifinal. Middlesbrough reported the matter to the EFL, and the image taken by a Middlesbrough photographer was circulated widely as the investigation began.
Southampton admitted they had also observed opposition training before games against Oxford United and Ipswich Town. The episode echoed Marcelo Bielsa’s 2019 admission while managing Leeds against Derby County; Leeds were fined £200,000 for that case, a sum Bielsa paid personally, and rules were changed afterwards so the practice now breaches official EFL regulations.
The three matches at the centre of the admissions produced no victories for Southampton. On Dec. 26, 2025, Oxford United beat Southampton 2-1. Oxford, 23rd at Christmas and having just dismissed Gary Rowett, secured the win through a Tyler Goodrham half-volley and an 89th-minute strike from Stan Mills; Oxford were ultimately relegated, finishing 22nd, while Southampton finished the season in fourth.
On April 28, 2026, Southampton drew 2-2 with second-placed Ipswich. Wes Burns opened the scoring in the 48th minute, Southampton came back through Ryan Manning and Cyle Larin, and Jack Clarke’s 87th-minute equaliser kept Ipswich on course; Ipswich later secured second place by beating QPR 3-0 on the final day, while the draw left Southampton to contest the playoffs.
The initial incident that triggered the inquiry occurred in a 0-0 first-leg draw at Middlesbrough on May 9, 2026, a tight semifinal in which Southampton did not register a shot on target. Southampton went on to progress after winning the second leg 2-1 after extra time, but the EFL investigation and the subsequent sanction have overshadowed the result.
