Holders PSG dominated the first half at a raucous Estadio Jose Alvalade and had two goals disallowed, with a third following after the interval. But Colombian striker Suárez gave the hosts a shock 74th-minute lead and though substitute Khvicha Kvaratskhelia quickly levelled, Suárez nodded a late winner. Luis Enrique made only one change to the XI that beat Lille 3-0 on Friday with Bradley Barcola , who scored as a substitute in that game, replacing Kvaratskhelia. PSG named only seven of the permitted 12 substitutes, including only four senior outfielders, while Warren Zaïre-Emery was nominally playing out of position at right-back but frequently inverting into his typical midfield berth. They controlled the early stages of what was the first meeting of these two European heavyweights and Rui Silva parried ex-Sporting full-back Nuno Mendes’ angled blast. Geny Catamo skimmed the side-netting from a rare break by the home side, before Senny Mayulu’s header was saved by Silva. Vitinha’s ferocious drive flashed just wide and Marquinhos twice headed off target. Luis Suárez celebrates after scoring a goal against PSG in the Champions League. Getty Images Rui Silva got a vital foot to Barcola’s cross with Ousmane Dembélé waiting, but was wrong-footed and helpless when Zaire-Emery headed in Fabian Ruiz’s cross — only for VAR Jarred Gillett to send referee Anthony Taylor to the monitor, where Mayulu’s foul on Catamo saw the goal disallowed. Matheus Reis brilliantly prevented Ruiz’s through-ball reaching Dembélé, who was then penalised for handling Zaire-Emery’s deflected shot to rule out Mendes’ close-range finish. Sporting could have taken a shock half-time lead when a free kick fell to Hidemasa Morita in the box, but the midfielder sliced over. Francisco Trincão was just unable to connect with Catamo’s cross for a fourth Champions League goal of the season early in the second half before normal service was resumed — in more ways than one, with Dembele’s headed goal chalked off by the offside flag. Rui Silva denied the Ballon d’Or winner at the near post and Désiré Doué shot over, but Catamo warmed Lucas Chevalier’s palms at the other end. Kvaratskhelia and Gonçalo Ramos were introduced as PSG sought a breakthrough but it came at the other end instead as Maximiliano Araujo’s corner was half-cleared, Catamo’s shot was blocked and Suárez was left alone by Kvaratskhelia to sidefoot home his 21st of the season. The Georgia winger instantly made amends, cutting in from the left and rifling a shot past Rui Silva into the far top corner. There was still a sting in the tail for PSG, though, as Chevalier weakly parried Trincao’s drive up into the middle of the penalty area and Suarez nodded in as the clock hit 90 minutes. Victory took Sporting level on 13 points with their opponents and one place behind them in sixth with one league-phase game remaining.
