Nine million people live in the state of New Jersey, with Atlantic City being the party and gambling hub of the state. It may not be the biggest city, but it has a reputation of being a little Las Vegas, attracting tourists from around the world to come and party, gamble and have a good time on the east coast.

There are nine casinos in the state, and now, they’re all allowed to have a sportsbook within their walls due to the overturn of PASPA in May 2018. The state wasted no time to legalize sports betting, and the first legal sports bets in the state of New Jersey were placed in June – one month after PASPA was overturned.

New Jersey has been spearheading the legalization of sports betting for years, and they were the leaders who made it all possible for states to legalize sports betting on their own terms. Now, the state is bringing in billions of dollars in revenue from legalized sports betting, and they’re the focal point for any sports betting story. They are arguably more popular in the sports betting market than Las Vegas.

The law permits any state casinos or racetracks to offer gambling on professional and college sports, but they cannot accept wagers on college games played in the state of New Jersey, or on games played out of state by New Jersey-based teams.

Visiting a physical sportsbook is fun and exciting, but sometimes, it’s better to bet from the comfort of your own home, or more convenient for those pressed for time. Many don’t have time to visit a sportsbook every day, so online sportsbooks fill that void and allow bettors to get in on the action from their smartphone or laptop.

New Jersey has some exclusive online sportsbook options, with many of the physical locations having mobile options, like DraftKings, FanDuel, SugarHouse, Caesars, and William Hill. There are also other options like BetDSI, or Bovada that give New Jersey bettors plenty of options when line shopping.

Betting on New Jersey Sports Teams

While you can’t bet on any New Jersey college programs within the state, you can certainly bet on the only real professional sport within the state lines.

The New Jersey Devils are the resident NHL team and are based out of Newark. The Devils struggled in the first few season in New Jersey, but picked it up in the 1990s-2000s where they won three Stanley Cups and five conference championships.

They haven’t done anything notable in the past decade, so betting on them to win is usually quite the gamble (no pun intended).

What to look for in an online sportsbook

We have outlined only a few of the many online sportsbook options available to New Jersey bettors. Many sportsbooks offer large bonuses, and a variety of deposit options, but some don’t. So you want to ensure that you find a book that suits all of your individual needs, and look for the criteria that means the most to you. Maybe you only want to make deposits and withdrawals in Bitcoin, so you’ll need to ensure that your online sportsbook accepts Bitcoin, like Bovada for example.

We have compiled a list of sportsbooks that we ourselves use and believe are the top sportsbooks in the market, and have reviewed them, including all of those important criteria like deposit options, bonuses, mobile friendliness, and cashout options, to name a few.
