Much like Virginia, West Virginia isn’t a professional or college sports hotspot. Obviously the state is lacking in the professional sports franchise category, but their collegiate programs are fairly well known.
The West Virginia Mountaineers have a college football team that has been around for about 105 years, and almost always make it to a Bowl game. In between 2003 and 2007, they made appearances in the major Bowl games – the Fiesta Bowl, Sugar Bowl and a few Gator Bowls. Lately, they haven’t had so much luck, but have made several Bowl appearances.
Another college football team based out of West Virginia is the Marshall Thundering Herd. They are a younger team in the league, and are not as widely known as the Mountaineers. They’ve racked up 12 Bowl game appearances in 40 years, which is definitely a huge accomplishment for a less established team.
