Free agent center Mason Plumlee is signing a 10-day contract with the San Antonio Spurs, giving San Antonio an experienced veteran presence in the frontcourt on a short-term deal.

Plumlee, a seasoned NBA big man, has built a reputation as a reliable rotational center over the course of his career. Known primarily for his screen setting, rebounding, passing from the high post, and activity around the rim, he has spent time with multiple franchises and has often been valued for his professionalism and ability to fit alongside a variety of lineups and playing styles.

By adding Plumlee on a 10-day contract, the Spurs gain additional depth at the center position without a long-term commitment, a common mechanism teams use during the season to address short-term roster needs or evaluate a player’s fit. Ten-day contracts also provide coaches an opportunity to experiment with different combinations on the floor, particularly with bench units or in specific game situations where size, experience, and interior defense are at a premium.

For Plumlee, the agreement offers a chance to reestablish himself within a team environment, contribute in whatever role is asked of him, and potentially earn a longer look. His skill set traditionally includes solid positional defense, the ability to finish plays as a roll man in pick-and-roll actions, and a willingness to facilitate offense by moving the ball quickly and setting effective screens to free guards and wings.

From the Spurs’ perspective, bringing in a veteran like Plumlee can also have benefits beyond the box score. Experienced players are often leaned on to help younger teammates with game preparation, communication on the floor, and understanding defensive coverages and offensive spacing at the NBA level. Even in a limited stint, that presence can influence practice habits and on-court organization.

The move fits within the broader pattern of NBA teams using the flexibility of 10-day contracts to adjust to injuries, testing different roster constructions, or adding situational depth as the season progresses. While the length of Plumlee’s stay in San Antonio will be determined by his performance, team needs, and roster dynamics, the agreement immediately bolsters the Spurs’ frontcourt options for the duration of the contract.
