The San Antonio Spurs secured a spot in the NBA Cup final with a surprising victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder, led by a standout performance from rookie forward Victor Wembanyama. The win marks a significant milestone for a Spurs team in the midst of a rebuilding phase and highlights the potential impact of their top draft selection.

Although Wembanyama played limited minutes, his presence was immediately felt on both ends of the floor. Known for his defensive acumen and shot-blocking ability, the 7-foot-4 forward altered multiple shots in the paint and provided a strong interior presence that helped disrupt the Thunder’s offensive rhythm. Offensively, Wembanyama showed flashes of the versatile skill set that made him one of the most anticipated prospects in recent years.

San Antonio balanced Wembanyama’s contributions with a team-oriented effort that saw multiple players contribute key baskets and defensive stops throughout the game. Head coach Gregg Popovich praised the team’s cohesion and focus, noting the disciplined execution that allowed the Spurs to outpace a Thunder squad that has been strong throughout the season.

The Thunder, who entered the matchup as favorites, struggled to find consistency on offense. Despite solid efforts from key players, they were unable to sustain momentum against a Spurs defense that tightened during critical stretches. Oklahoma City’s bench also faced difficulty breaking through San Antonio’s rotations, limiting their usual production.

The NBA Cup, first introduced as part of the league’s expanded midseason competition format, has grown in significance as teams compete for an additional trophy and added playoff implications. With the win, the Spurs will move on to face the winner of the other semifinal matchup, hoping to cap an eventful run through the tournament with a championship.

Wembanyama’s performance, while statistically modest, reinforces the growing belief in his potential to become a franchise cornerstone. As the Spurs prepare for the final, they do so with renewed confidence and a sense of direction that could shape their trajectory in seasons to come.
