St. Louis Advances to the Stanley Cup Final, the IIHF Worlds Field is Set, and More

The St. Louis Blues have made it to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time in nearly five decades. St. Louis hammered the San Jose Sharks, 5-1, in Game 6 of the Western Conference Finals to move on to the Stanley Cup Finals, where they will face the Boston Bruins. The series is slated to start on May 27, giving the Blues plenty of time to rest.

The Blues’ turnaround this season has been remarkable. Rookie goaltender Jordan Binnington has been one of the catalysts, but it’s been a complete team effort after a team that was supposed to be a contender collapsed before surging over the second half of the season.

St. Louis has the longest Stanley Cup drought of any team that joined after the Original Six. Interestingly, the Blues made the playoffs in each of their first three seasons, but they haven’t been back to the Stanley Cup Finals since 1970. This piece captures a lot of the heartbreak that Blues fans have endured along the way.

Boston has been waiting for a while to see who would win out west, so the Bruins are going to try to keep fresh with a scrimmage during the long layoff. The Bruins have decided to make the scrimmage open to the public, and the money will go to their charity.

Team Canada closed out the group stage with a 3-0 win over Team USA to finish first in Group A at the 2019 IIHF World Championships. Team Canada will face Team Switzerland (who knocked them out in the semifinals of last year’s competition) in the quarterfinals, while Team USA will face Russia. Russia has yet to lose and has looked absolutely dominating in this tournament.
