Dallas Stars forward Mikko Rantanen is expected to miss time after sustaining a lower-body injury while with Finland’s national team at the Winter Olympics. Rantanen did not play in Finland’s bronze-medal victory over Slovakia, and the injury has raised questions about his immediate availability once NHL play resumes.

The Stars have not released a detailed timetable for Rantanen’s return, and the specific nature of the lower-body injury has not been disclosed. However, the decision to hold him out of Finland’s medal game suggests that team medical staff and coaches opted for caution rather than risk aggravating the issue in a high-stakes setting.

For Dallas, Rantanen’s absence will be notable. Since joining the Stars, he has been a central part of their forward group, relied upon for his combination of size, puck protection, playmaking and scoring. His versatility allows coaches to use him in a variety of situations, including key even-strength minutes and critical shifts late in games. Losing that presence, even for a short stretch, forces adjustments throughout the lineup.

The Stars are expected to lean more heavily on their remaining top-six forwards and may look to increase ice time for depth players or call up reinforcements from their AHL affiliate to help cover the minutes Rantanen normally logs. Line combinations could be shuffled as the coaching staff looks for the right balance of offense and defensive responsibility without one of its key wingers.

From Finland’s perspective, Rantanen’s injury came at an unfortunate time but did not prevent the team from securing the bronze medal. His absence in the win over Slovakia was a reminder of the physical demands of international competition, especially in a condensed tournament format where players face quick turnarounds and high-intensity games.

Both the Stars and Rantanen will now focus on his recovery, with the organization likely to provide further updates once he is back under the care of the team’s medical staff. Until then, his status remains day-to-day, and Dallas will prepare to open its post-Olympic schedule without one of its prominent forwards in the lineup.
