Atlantic 10 Conference Preview

With a 15-2 start, it's clear that Archie Miller and the Dayton Flyers aren't out of magic yet.

It finally appears time for VCU to officially pass the torch they’ve held in recent years under former head coach Shaka Smart. Of course, it was Davidson who finished atop the standings last year, but you know what we mean.

With the Rams taking a long step back from the roll as favorite, who can make the leap forward? Check below, in our Atlantic 10 Conference Preseason Preview.

A10 Champion: Dayton Flyers

While they’ll start their year without Dyshawn Pierre, and possibly go the entire season without him, Archie Miller has already shown the nation what he’s capable with shorthanded rosters. There’s no reason to doubt that Miller can’t get this year’s team on the same page moving forward.

A10 Runner-up: Rhode Island Rams

The Rams should be right there with the Flyers at the top of the standings, thanks in large part to our POY pick. Hassan Martin and Kuran Iverson, along with a handful of other Rams, make Dan Hurley’s group the squad with the most upside in the conference.

A10 Dark horse: Davidson Wildcats

Combine Jack Gibbs with Jordan Barham, and you’ve got what could be the most lethal one-two punch in the entire conference. It’s hard to count these guys out, given that they’re the defending champs.

A10 Player of the Year: E.C. Matthews Rhode Island

If you’re looking for a do-it-all Mr. Everything, look no further than Matthews, who averaged 16.9 points, 4.6 rebounds, and two assists per game a year ago. A top two finish, and similar production, should keep him in a good position to lock this one down.

A10 Coach of the Year: Dan Hurley, Rhode Island

What Hurley has done in just three seasons at URI is amazing, and not getting nearly enough credit nationally. I think that ends this year, with Hurley finally being recognized for a truly amazing rebuild.
