Boxing Odds: A Pair Of British World Champs Look To Defend Their Belts Saturday

Both of England’s super bantamweight world champions fight this Saturday thousands of miles apart as WBA World Champion Scott Quigg defends his title in Manchester against the challenge of Spain’s Kiko Martinez. Across the pond, IBF kingpin Carl Frampton makes his debut on American soil in Texas where he faces Alejandro Gonzalez Jr.

Both Quigg and Frampton are longtime rivals that have worked their way to world titles.  The war of words between the two has gotten heated at times, and the two are expected to face each other at some point, with plans being talked about for the end of 2015.

Both men must win their respective fights, but since both are fighting on the same day, their schedules are the same, which should make the eventual British showdown easier to make. But both men must win.  Martinez is a former World Champion who has battled Frampton twice, but this is his first time facing the more experienced Quigg.  As for Gonzalez Jr, he is likely not ready to match skill with Frampton, but he is the son of a former world champion and he will have the home field advantage fighting in El Paso.

Also on the card in Texas and airing on Showtime is the Julio Cesar Chavez Jr vs Marcos Reyes bout that sees Chavez Jr fighting under heavy pressure from a variety of questions towards his alleged marijuana use, his dedication to the sport and to his ability to make weight. Add to that the fact that he got creamed in his last fight at light heavyweight, and Chavez Jr’s return to super middleweight is understandable.
