Champions Tour Insperity Invitational Preview

The Champions Tour will shift to The Woodlands in Texas for this week’s Insperity Invitational. Jesper Parnevik returns as the defending champion this week after winning here a year ago. However, a quick glance at the sports betting odds for this week’s Champions Tour event shows how the sportsbooks aren’t expecting Parnevik to successfully defend his title. Parnevik is listed at +125,000 odds to win this week’s tournament outright. Meanwhile, the usual suspects are set to headline the event with Bernhard Langer, Fred Couples and Miguel Angel Jimenez all set to contend.

Event Details

Event: Insperity Invitational

Category: Champions

Date: May 5-7

Location: The Woodlands Country Club, The Woodlands, Texas

Vijay Singh is coming off his first Champions Tour victory but will play in the Wells Fargo Championship on the PGA Tour this week. Singh is certainly in excellent form so this week’s field has to be in favor of him competing on the PGA Tour instead. With no European or LPGA Tour events scheduled for this week the Insperity Invitational is set to share the spotlight with the Wells Fargo Championship.

Past Five Winners

2016: Jesper Parnevik -12

2015: Ian Woosnam -11 (Playoff)

2014: Bernhard Langer -11

2013: Esteban Toledo -6 (Playoff)

2012: Fred Funk -10

What To Know About The Course

The Woodlands is a census-designated area in Texas that features The Woodlands Country Club. Driving Accuracy will once again be one of the keys to victory at this week’s tournament. Meanwhile, Putting numbers will be crucial to success so keep those statistics in mind when evaluating this week’s field. Two of the last four editions of this tournament have finished in a playoff so we an expect another closely contested finish again this weekend.

The Field

Langer will headline this week’s event as the only golfer to record multiple victories at this tournament with three wins here. Langer won here for the first time in 2007, then followed it up with victories here in 2008 and 2014. It should be no surprise that Langer is the sports betting favorite to win here as he is listed at +500 odds. Meanwhile, Fred Couples is also expected to be in the mix at +600 odds to win this event outright. Couples won here back in 2010 but hasn’t been able to repeat at the Insperity Invitational. Miguel Angel Jimenez, Kevin Sutherland and Tom Lehman round out the sports betting favorites for this week’s tournament.

Taking a look at the updated standings, Bernhard Langer is our money leader on the year. He has collected $750,250 in winnings so far to lead the money list. Fred Couples is right behind him in second place as he has won $592,533. In third place is Miguel-Angel Jimenez, who has had a pretty good year. He has eclipsed the half-a-million mark with $500,842 in winnings. Scott McCarron is in fourth place whiel Carlos Franco rounds out our top five. Both have won over $420,000 so far this season.

A Good Matchup To Bet: John Daly over Phillip Price

We did some digging for our head-to-head sports betting matchup this week and figured that Daly represents one of the better values. Daly is still looking for his top-10 finish on the Champions Tour. However, the two-time major champion made his debut on the Champions Tour at this event last year when he placed 17th. A similar finish should be enough for Daly to edge out Price in this head-to-head sports betting matchup.

Top Five Pick: Bernhard Langer

It’s impossible to argue against the success that Langer has had here in the past as the only golfer in the field with multiple wins in this tournament. Langer has been a staple at the Insperity Invitational and we expect another strong performance this year. Langer might not win this event outright but a top-five finish should be expected.
