Where Are The Best Landing Spots For Edinson Cavani’s Fantasy Value?

Cavani could be on the move...but is he heading to Spain or England?

After spending the last couple of years playing for Paris Saint-Germain, Edinson Cavani is reportedly set to leave France. He’s become one of the hottest commodities on the market this summer.

According to reports, a number of teams have contacted Cavani’s people about the opportunity to sign the 28-year-old midfielder and while the Uruguyan International might not have his pick of them when it comes to deciding his club future, there will be no shortage of teams for PSG to choose from if they decide to sell him. Here is a look at the top four potential landing spots for Cavani this summer.

Real Madrid

Cavani has been linked to both Spain and England, and the most likely situation could see him end up with a Real Madrid team that is in major need of a boost in their central midfield. There is no denying the world class talents of players like Real Madrid, James Rodriguez and Gareth Bale but many feel that Madrid would really benefit from the addition of a central midfielder that can link those players together with some creativity through the middle. Real Madrid could choose to pay a hefty price for Cavani’s services and if there is one team that has the money and influence to buy him from PSG, they could very well be the frontrunner.

Manchester United

United’s lack of elite talent in the midfield has been a major issue for the club over the past couple of seasons and according to reports, they are pushing hard for the chance to address that issue by signing Cavani (they’re also aiming to add Bastian Schweinsteiger). Louis van Gaal is reportedly so determined to land Cavani that he is willing to trade Angel Di Maria in a straight swap for him – if it comes to that. His first couple of seasons at Old Trafford have been marred by inconsistency and he has to feel the addition of Cavani would go a long way in stabilizing his midfield core.

However, United is still at least a couple of key pieces away from becoming a legitimate title contender in the Premier League – not to mention on the Champions League stage – so Cavani likely won’t consider them his best option provided that the money he is offered is relatively similar across the board.

Manchester City

It’s highly unlikely that United will let City swoop in and grab Cavani from under their pursuit of him but they might not have a choice as PSG will ultimately decide the sale. City will be in the market for a star midfielder after Frank Lampard left for the MLS and they certainly have the money they would need to spend to get in to the running for Cavani. City did finish nine points up on United in the table and could be closer to competing for both a league title and in the Champions League, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if Cavani ends up there as a potentially better fit.

Paris Saint-Germain

Cavani’s agent has insisted that his player has not made any firm decisions about his future and was recently reluctant to admit he could be moved when he told reporters, “Is Cavani on the market? At the moment it is a bit too early to say. Edi is under contract with PSG, and there are several factors that come into play with regards to his future.” The fact that Cavani’s agent remains unwilling to elaborate on his situation should be no surprise but with everything considered, it might not be the worst thing for him to stay in Paris – especially in terms of fantasy. PSG has become a perennial Ligue 1 championship contender and a major player in the Champions League, so if they can keep their current core in place including Cavani it could be his best chance for success at the club level. And from a fantasy perspective, we’ll know what we’re getting.
