Giants Deny Fake Injury, Red Sox Heating Up Fast and More

Giants pitcher Derek Holland said over the weekend that the team had told him to fake an injury so they could hide him on the injured list. It’s one of the stranger news stories Major League Baseball has seen in a while (and that’s saying something). The team is denying the allegation and has some receipts. Elsewhere, the demise of the reigning world champion Red Sox was greatly exaggerated, the Dodgers have an ace — and his name isn’t Clayton Kershaw or Walker Buehler — and Edwin Jackson is approaching an unprecedented milestone.

Hmm. Sounds an awful lot like Derek Holland made something up because he was salty about a move to the bullpen. It raises an interesting discussion, though.

After a sluggish start, the Red Sox have gotten red hot. Yeah, turns out the defending champions will be a big factor in the American League East again.

Hyun-Jin Ryu isn’t supposed to be the Dodgers’ best starting pitcher, or even their second-best. But he’s thrown two near no-hitters in a row and is showing off Los Angeles’ ridiculous depth.

Edwin Jackson is productive enough to stay in the big leagues, but not valuable enough to hold onto, apparently. He was traded again this week, and when he debuts for the Blue Jays, it’ll be his MLB-record 14th team.

Oy. Another black eye for Tropicana Field, which houses a very good team in the Rays but is a problem for Major League Baseball. Tampa Bay’s game with the Yankees was delayed for 43 minutes Sunday because of a ninth-inning power outage.
