The Philadelphia Phillies are hoping to supplement their bench with some power and cement their lead atop the National League East. The Seattle Mariners, after a red-hot start, have faded badly and want to trade veterans for longer-term assets. That made the teams perfect trade partners, and it appears the Mariners have agreed to send outfielder/first baseman Jay Bruce to the Phillies for salary relief and a minor leaguer. Elsewhere, the Rangers might lose slugger Joey Gallo for an extended period, the Brewers won’t have their opening-day starter and the Twins just keep winning.
Bruce is hitting just .212, but he has 14 home runs, a total that would lead the Phillies.
