Sunday Night Football Gets a New Theme Song; Bills Get Good News on Watkins

Underwood swats away the old SNF theme song.

Have you been waiting all day for Sunday night? Well, NBC and Sunday Night Football no longer care. The old themesong has been trashed in favor of a football-themed version of Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood’s “Something Bad.” And if you had no idea that song even existed, you and I can be best friends.

NBC used the “Waiting all Day for Sunday Night” song for the last decade, first sang by Pink in 2006, then by Faith Hill from 2007-2012. Underwood took over in 2013. It was a football-themed version of Joan Jett’s “I Hate Myself for Loving You.”

The idea for the new song actually came from Underwood who actually pitched the change to NBC. The new song is officially called “Oh, Sunday Night” which sounds more like a Christmas tune.

“The (old) song has lasted 10 years,” NBC executive producer Fred Gaudelli told the Associated Press. “But I didn’t know how much more we could stay with the song without it feeling routine.”

NBC and the NFL created the Sunday Night Football package in 2006, the same year Monday Night Football moved from ABC to ESPN. Since then it’s become an institution and has been the highest rated show/event on television for years in pretty much every demographic. Underwood’s new theme song will be seen and heard by about 24 million people a week.

“It has such a great stomp-clap, a ‘We Will Rock You’ kind of feel to it,” Underwood said. “This is such a high energy song.”

So enjoy it while you can, people. It’s now gone the way of “All My Rowdy Friends” to football theme song heaven.

Sunday Night Football actually premiers on Thursday, Sept. 8, with the Carolina Panthers taking on the new Denver  Broncos in a Super Bowl 50 rematch. It’s official premier is Sunday, Sept. 11 when the New England Patriots take on the Arizona Cardinals.

Watkins should be able to participate in training camp

Any worry about Buffalo Bills wide receiver Sammy Watkins missing training camp after surgery on his left foot were assuaged Monday when Watkins told TSN that he should be healed enough to participate shortly after camp starts on July 30.

“For training camp, I think I’ll definitely be available,” Watkins said. ” I might sit out two or three days. It’s all about how I feel within those days. The goal is to come back be prepared for training camp.”

The fear with Watkins was that he would miss all of camp and the preseason, so this is significant news for both Watkins and the Bills.

“We will definitely be smart with him,” Bills head coach Rex Ryan said. “But like I said, I am sure he is going to get some work (in training camp). It’s just we don’t have a definitive date.”

Watkins recorded his first 1,000-yard season last year, catching 60 passes for 1,047 yards and nine touchdowns and that’s missing three games due to his injury.

Broncos troll Panthers on Twitter

It’s beginning to get out of hand, this social media battle between the Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers. The Broncos are basically just rubbing it in at this point.

After the Golden State Warriors lost Game Seven of the NBA Finals to the Cleveland Cavaliers Sunday night, the Panthers’ twitter account tweeted its condolences.

The Broncos twitter folks would not let that pass without comment.

Man, you know the Panthers are going to try to win that Thursday Night season-opening game by 100.

Tillman still wants to play, only with Carolina

Speaking of the Panthers, cornerback Charles Tillman has made it clear that he’d like to come back for a 14th NFL season, but only if he can return to the Panthers. Tillman tore his ACL with Carolina in the final game of the regular season so he missed the entire postseason.

Last year Tillman played in 12 games for Carolina, recording 36 tackles, one fumble recovery, seven passes defended and two interceptions. Tillman played for the Panthers on a one-year deal. With the team drafted three cornerbacks and second-year corner Bene Benwikere returning from injury too, Tillman’s spot is probably taken. But a few injuries could have his phone ringing sometime in the middle of the season.
