Talk N Shoot Boxing Podcast – Episode 10

154 LBers Take Center Stage

The Talk ‘n’ Shoot Boxing Podcast is back with edition number 10, as the 154 LBers take center stage as the super welterweight category comes front and center. The duo of Jermall and Jermell Charlo have our full attention, as the feature on Showtime takes up a big part of the broadcast.

Jermall Charlo (24-0) successfully defended his IBF world title with a unanimous decision over the crafty Austin Trout (30-3). Trout is a former champion in his own right and he fought admirably, especially in closing the distance towards the end of the fight. But Charlo was too big, strong and technical and he retained his belt.

Brother Jermell faced John Jackson for the vacant WBC world title at super welterweight and Jermell had to endure a real test. Jermell won with an eighth round knock out but he was behind on thw scorecards when he did it.

The win leaves the Chralo brothers as twins with world championships in the same weight class, a boxing first. The two have made a goal of locking down the entire weight class similar to the way the Klitschko brothers did in the heavyweight division.

The Charlo brothers shared the broadcast with fellow 154 lb title holder and training partner Erislandy Lara. Lara a Cuban defector with an amazing amateur resume believes he is one of the most technical fighters on the planet. His followers love him but there are many that find his style is not a crowd pleaser.

The bout this past Saturday was a re-match as he faced Vanes Martirosyan for the second time. The first fight ended in unsatisfactory fashion as Martirosyan suffered a cut on an accidental headbutt in the 9th round. The fight went to the judges scores and the fight was declared a draw.

The re-match was a maddening example of what pisses people off about Lara. Once he establishes himself as the better fighter, he has a tendency to cruise and not use his power to finish opponents.

Showtime returns on June 11th with a card at the Turning Stone Casino in upstate New York that features undefeated 22-0 Demetrius Andrade and rugged veteran Ruslan Provodnikov both in separate matches at 154 lbs. also chomping at the bit to throw his hat in the 154 lb title picture is Philadelphia’s Julian Jackson, so it is a great time for the 154 lb weight class.

154 LBers Take Center Stage

The Talk ‘n’ Shoot Podcast is never complete without some talk about the heavyweight division and heavyweight boxing. This past weekend would have seen the WBC world title showdown between Deontay Wilder and Alexander Povetkin in Russia, but the match was postponed due to a positive PED test on the part of Povetkin.

We also review some of the results from this past weekend, as there was still considerable heavyweight action that impacts the world scene. In New Zealand, 24 year old prospect Joseph Parker moved his record to a perfect 19-0 with a unanimous deeicison victory over Carlos Takam, who falls to 33-3-1 overall. Takam was ranked #8 in the world, it will be interesting to see if Parker cracks the TBRB.org rankings.

We also take a look at the David Haye and Shannon Briggs show in London, as both Heavyweights made short work of out matched opponents to set up a match between the two for September.
