Thanksgiving Throwback: The Greatest Football Comeback That Never Was

Now, behold the magic of the 1994 Plano East-John Tyler football game. Indeed, some 25 years ago right now; these two Texas High School football teams locked horns for a battle that should be talked about forever.

Therefore, we will do them justice in the spirit of Turkey Day and Thanksgiving football. It doesn’t get any better than this.

Obviously, that video is worth five minutes of your time simply for the announcer’s comments. Equally, the Wikipedia page about the game is worth a read when you’re finished with this post. This game is widely known as one of the greatest games ever played, and used to be shown regularly on ESPN Classic. Please join me in getting nostalgic before you eat yourself into a nap.

Setting the Stage

It was two 12-0 teams squaring off at old Texas Stadium (former home of the Dallas Cowboys) in the state playoffs. While Plano East was ranked #2 in the state, John Tyler was ranked a powerful #3.

Moreover, both of these squads were known for stout defense. John Tyler entered allowing just 14 points per game, while the Plano East Panthers took the field allowing around nine a game.

It was just then that a donnybrook of epic proportions broke out.

The Game Itself

The John Tyler Lions were looking at seemingly insurmountable 41–17 lead with only 3:03 remaining. Therefore most fans headed for the exits. Then Plano East scored quickly with 2:36 remaining to cut the score to 41-23. After missing the two-point attempt, Plano East executed three straight onside kicks.

Each of these onside kicks resulted in a touchdown, giving Plano East a 44–41 comeback lead with only 24 seconds remaining.

“Bingo, bango, bongo!”

Just listening to these announcers is worth the price of admission.

The Shrewd Ending

In the end, the hero always falls tragically short doesn’t he? Of course this game would prove no differently.

After taking the lead, Plano East did a regular kick off and kicked it deep to John Tyler return man Roderick Dunn. Dunn caught the ball at his own three-yard line and took it 97 yards for a touchdown at 0:11 and a 48–44 Lions victory.

Finally, seven touchdowns combined were scored by both teams in the game’s final four and a half minutes.

The Aftermath

As mentioned, this game is still being talked about today.

You will enjoy this documentary on it.
