As the 2026 NFL season approaches, the NFC South faces a series of compelling storylines that could significantly shape the division. From quarterback battles to emerging rookies and divisional rivalries, teams in the NFC South have no shortage of intrigue heading into the offseason.

One of the most prominent topics centers around the quarterbacks. After leading the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a strong finish in 2025, quarterback Baker Mayfield made headlines with comments directed at the Atlanta Falcons, hinting at growing tension between the teams. Mayfield has reestablished himself as a leader in Tampa Bay, and his presence continues to drive the Bucs’ offensive strategy. Meanwhile, the Falcons appear to be evaluating their long-term quarterback options, with competition at the position likely to be a storyline throughout training camp.

In Carolina, second-year quarterback Bryce Young remains a focal point following a season of development. The 2023 first overall pick showed flashes of potential and is expected to take a larger role in 2026. The Panthers are banking on his continued growth in an evolving offense that seeks to improve consistency and scoring production.

Rookie development is another major theme across the division. Michael Penix Jr., recently drafted by the New Orleans Saints, is viewed as a potential starting quarterback in the future. How quickly he transitions to the professional level could have a lasting impact on the team’s direction. Additionally, Tyler Shough, also in his first NFL season, will be monitored closely for his potential to contribute, depending on his team’s quarterback needs.

The intensity of divisional rivalries continues to shape the NFC South’s competitive landscape. Historically close matchups, especially between the Saints and Falcons, remain highly anticipated, with recent player comments amplifying these rivalries. Teams are expected to build around young talent while maintaining a strong core to stay competitive in a division known for its parity.

As offseason programs and training camps get underway, these questions will come into focus. The outcomes may determine which teams rise in the standings and push for playoff contention, making the NFC South one of the more intriguing divisions to watch in the 2026 NFL season.
