Top 5 Goalkeepers From Serie A This Past Season

Buffon defied age...again.

Juventus’ dominance at the top of the Serie A table was the biggest storyline from the league this past season, so it’s certainly no surprise that when we break down the best goalkeepers in the league from a fantasy perspective, their star keeper is right there at the top of the list. Starting there, let’s take a look at the best fantasy goalkeepers from the Italy’s top league past season factoring in win totals, clean sheets, saves and goals against average.

Gianluigi Buffon, Juventus

The ageless wonder continued his incredible work at 37 years old. This season, he helped Juventus to another Serie A title as they ran away with it. They finished with 17 more points than the second-best team. Buffon was head and shoulders above everyone else as the league’s best fantasy goalkeeper again this season. The win totals were obvious but Buffon also allowed only 20 goals against over 33 Serie A games, which is good for an outstanding 0.61 goals against average. As a team, they only allowed 24, which was by far the fewest in Serie A. Buffon also led the Serie A with 18 clean sheets to once against solidify his spot at the top of this impressive list.

Soccer fans have wondered for some time how much longer he will be able to stand alone at the top of this list but they can check this season off as one more year with Buffon as the league’s best fantasy goalkeeper.

Morgan De Sanctis, Roma

Juventus led the league with 87 points this past season, which was 17 more than second-place Roma finished with but that wasn’t De Sanctis’ fault. He was the league’s second-best goalkeeper this past season as the team allowed just 31 goals, which was also second to Juventus. De Sanctis faced more shots than Buffon and that led to him making 18 more saves than the Juventus goalkeeper on the year, so while he didn’t match his win or clean sheet total, he still put up excellent numbers while allowing the second-fewest goals in the Serie A this past season.

Samir Handanovic, Inter Milan

Inter’s struggles in the Serie A had nothing to do with the play of their goalkeeper as Handanovic ranked among the best fantasy keepers in the Serie A this past season. Handanovic had more saves than both Buffo and De Sanctis as he finished the year with 97 and his 11 clean sheets had him ranked third in the Serie A in that category. Inter was not without its issues but allowing 48 goals was fairly reasonable given the situation.

Albano Bizzarri, Chievo

Bizzarri didn’t record the same win totals as Buffon and De Sanctis but his 0.86 goals against average was the third-best in the Serie A. That’s quite impressive as Chievo Verona finished 14th in the league standings but still allowed the fourth-fewest goals. He also finished with an outstanding 13 clean sheets. That’s quite an impressive total on such a mediocre team but they play a ton of low-scoring, defensive contests. He finished the year with 88 saves to make this list as one of the top fantasy goalkeepers in the Serie A this past year.

Federico Marchetti, Lazio

Marchetti allowed just over a goal per game this season and he finished the year with only 10 clean sheets, but he was right there near the top of the list when it came to his overall win total. Lazio gave up just 38 goals this season – third-best in the Serie A – and Marchetti played a major role in their third place finish there and in the standings. Marchetti only needed to make 70 saves, which is the fewest on this list, but the win total (21) helped him still rank among the best fantasy goalkeepers in the Serie A this season.
