UEFA has fined Tottenham Hotspur and imposed a suspended ban on the club’s travelling supporters after a group of fans were found to have made Nazi salutes during a Champions League match against Eintracht Frankfurt. The incident occurred at a recent away fixture in European competition, prompting an investigation by UEFA’s disciplinary bodies and a formal response from the English club.

According to UEFA, the sanctions were issued under regulations covering discriminatory and racist behaviour inside stadiums. Video and photographic evidence circulated after the match showed a small number of Tottenham fans in the away section appearing to perform Nazi salutes, gestures that are strictly prohibited under UEFA’s rules and widely condemned across the sport.

Following its review, UEFA announced a financial penalty for Tottenham and ordered a ban on the sale of tickets to the club’s away supporters for a future UEFA competition match. That ban has been suspended and will only be activated if there is another proven incident of a similar nature within a specified probationary period. This type of suspended measure is often used by UEFA to encourage clubs to take concrete steps to prevent repeat offences among their fan base.

Tottenham publicly acknowledged the behaviour and confirmed that it was cooperating with authorities to identify those involved. The club stated that such conduct is completely unacceptable and does not represent the values of Tottenham Hotspur or the vast majority of its supporters. Tottenham also indicated it would issue stadium bans to any individuals positively identified as having made the gestures, extending beyond European fixtures to cover domestic matches as well.

The episode adds to ongoing efforts within European football to address racism, antisemitism and other forms of hate speech and symbolism in stadiums. UEFA, national federations and clubs across the continent have repeatedly stressed that symbols and gestures associated with Nazism have no place in the game. Sanctions commonly include fines, partial or full stadium closures, and restrictions on travelling fans.

In this case, Tottenham’s sanction serves as both a punishment and a warning. The financial penalty underlines the club’s responsibility for the behaviour of its supporters during UEFA competitions, while the suspended away-fan ban places the club under added scrutiny in future European fixtures. Tottenham is expected to continue working with supporter groups, security staff and competition organisers to reinforce guidelines on appropriate behaviour and to ensure that similar incidents are avoided going forward.

The club’s response and UEFA’s ruling form part of a wider push within football to create a safer and more respectful environment for all participants. While only a small number of individuals were implicated in this incident, both UEFA and Tottenham have emphasised that even isolated acts of discriminatory behaviour will draw firm disciplinary action and ongoing monitoring in subsequent matches.
