Tuberville Running for Senate Seat, Notre Dame OL Undergoes Surgery

Over the last decade, there has been a growing movement for former coaches and athletes to enter politics. JC Watts, Tom Osborne, and Heath Shuler have all served as Congressmen and now Tommy Tuberville is throwing his hat into the ring. Tuberville is looking to become the Republican Party’s nominee for one of Alabama’s two Senate seats in the 2020 election.

Tuberville is currently ahead in the polls in his bid to win the Republican Party primary. Tuberville coached at Auburn from 1999 to 2008, and he is a beloved figure in the state, even among Alabama fans. The GOP lost the seat after the scandalous Roy Moore ended up as their candidate in a special election in 2017, but Tuberville has a much better chance to beat Doug Jones in an election.

Notre Dame has high hopes for 2019 after finishing last season undefeated, and a solid offensive line is one of the foundations of those hopes. Unfortunately, starting left guard Aaron Banks was injured during summer practice and underwent surgery on his foot yesterday. Banks is expected to be ready in time for the start of the season, but if he’s not that would be a blow for the Fighting Irish.

Every few years, there is an athlete from a service academy that impresses NFL scouts enough to be selected in the draft. Former Navy quarterback Keenan Reynolds is the most recent major example, and he has been allowed to play in the NFL and defer his military commitment until later. The POTUS eliminated that provision earlier in his presidency, but he wants to have it brought back and in place by the end of this year.
