Tucson Conquistadores Classic Preview

The Champions Tour heads to Tucson, Arizona and the Omni Tucson National Resort for the Tucson Conquistadores Classic this week. This year’s tournament will mark the third installment of the tournament with Marco Dawson winning the initial event back in 2015 and Woody Austin winning here a year ago. Both Dawson and Austin will be back as part of this year’s loaded field, which is headlined by three-time Charles Schwab Cup winner Bernhard Langer.

Event Details

Event: Tucson Conquistadores Classic

Category: Champions

Date: March 17-19

Location: Omni Tucson National Resort, Tucson, Arizona

The Tucson Conquistadores Classic is one of the most popular stops on the senior circuit in big part because of the tournament’s home in Tucson, Arizona. The rich history of golf in the area has made this event one of the most visited on the senior circuit and the large crowds on hand will be hoping for another exciting finish this week.

Past Winners

2016: Woody Austin -16

2015: Marco Dawson -13

What To Know About The Course

The Omni Tucson National Resort is located at the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains and that means plenty of good weather all year around. The conditions should be perfect for this week’s event at the 7,143-yard, Par 72 layout. This year’s tournament should be another birdie-fest with Greens In Regulation and Putting numbers once again among the most important statistics to consider. Consistency in both areas will be key with a number of contenders entering this event with a good amount of experience at this course.

The Field

Langer is listed at +600 odds to win this tournament outright but he isn’t the sports betting favorite according to a number of sportsbooks. That title belongs to Steve Stricker, who is available at +400 odds. Fred Couples is right behind those two at +800 odds, followed by Jerry Kelly and David Toms at +1200 odds.  Kevin Sutherland, Scott McCarron and Joe Durant are all in the mix as well at +2000 odds or better depending on the sportsbook you visit.

A Good Matchup To Bet: Jerry Kelly over David Toms

Toms isn’t a terrible pick for this week but we like Kelly to deliver a strong performance so it makes sense to Toms in the head-to-head matchup as a strong value bet. Kelly tied for third at the Chubb Classic in his Champions Tour debut and the 50-year-old has fond memories at the Catalina Course where he won the Chrysler Classic of Tucson back in 2006. The three-time PGA Tour winner should shine this week in Arizona and we like him to finish ahead of Toms in the head-to-head sports betting matchup.

Top-Five Pick: Tom Lehman

The best bet on the board to finish in the top-five might very well be Lehman, who is listed at a ridiculous +10000 odds to win outright. Lehman is an Arizona resident that has plenty of experience at this course and should feel very comfortable at this tournament. He finished in the top-20 here last year but he is much better form early on in 2017 with a pair of top-five finished already this year. Lehman might not win outright, but he is a very good bet to finish in the top-five and considering his long odds there isn’t a better value bet on the board for this week’s Tucson Conquistadores Classic. Take him to finish in the top five.
