UFC 179 Odds: Aldo vs. Mendes, Plus Other Main Card Lines

Up next is the UFC 179 card scheduled for October 25th in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.  The event is headlined by the Featherweight title defense for champion Jose Aldo as he takes on Chad Mendes.  Right now, the books have Aldo a (-240) favorite, with the return on Mendes sitting at (+200).  The lines for the rest main card have just hit the books. Let’s run down some of the UFC 179 odds.

In the co-main at light heavyweight, Brazilian slugger Glover Teixeira is a (-270) favorite over Phil Davis, who returns at (+210).  Both men are coming off losses and need a win, but Teixiera is coming off a loss to Champion Jon Jones, so he is fighting to keep his top 5 ranking, while Davis stumbled against Anthony Johnson and has to win to keep any upward momentum he might have had.    Teixeira is expected to win, but the match is interesting in that Davis does have the skill set necessary to beat Teixeira, the hard part is putting those skills to use.

Brazilian Fabio Maldonado is a slight (-160) favorite over Hans Stringer, who returns (+130).  The home field advantage for Maldonado is mitigated somewhat, in that Stringer won his UFC debut in Brazil last March, so he has done the trip before.  Maldonado needs a bit of redemption after basically not doing any thing against Stipe Miocic in his last outing,

Darren Elkins checks in favored at (-180) in his Featherweight bout against Lucas Martins.  It will be interesting to see if Elkins is able to get going in this fight, as he is 1-2 in his last three outings and Martins will be aggressively protecting his three-fight winning streak in the UFC (3-1 overall with the big show) at home.  That’s a tall order for Elkins, who is rock tough but has holes in his game that have been exploited.

The final fight with lines up right now is Carlos Diego Ferreira favored (-170) over Beniel Dariush, who returns at (+140).  Ferreira is a Brazilian who has been fighting with the USA based Legacy Fighting Championships, and he has maintained a perfect (11-0) record.  Dariush could be in trouble here if the A,B,C game means anything, as his lone loss is to Rmsey Nijem, while Ferriera owns a fight-of-the-night TKO win over Nijem.
