Cub Swanson Closes Out Dias with Exciting Decision Win

Cub Swanson made a triumphant return against Hacran Dias with a three-round unanimous decision win. Swanson and Dias mostly engaged in 15 minutes of back-and-forth striking exchanges, and it made for a very entertaining bout. Swanson, known for his high-risk, high-reward style, got himself into some compromised positions, but slugged his way out. This was very much a battle of conventional (Hacran Dias) and unconconventional (Cub Swanson). Swanson was loose, and bobbed and weaved inside the pocket to deliver big power punches. Specifically, his lead left hook proved especially effective as it dropped Dias in the second round. Then, a lead left head kick put Dias down again in the third. Welcome back to the winner’s circle, Cub Swanson!

It’s difficult to say who he might face next, but with a great performance like this against a legitimate top 10 contender in Hacran Dias, it’s not too unreasonable to think he will be getting a top level talent next.

Khabib Nurmagomedov Pounds Out Darrell Horcher

It may not have come as a surprise, but Khabib Nurmagomedov looked up to form as he pounded out UFC newcomer and last-minute replacement Darrell Horcher. Early on, Horcher looked quite sharp on the feet as he landed a straight left with precision and even showed some impressive head movement. However, it wasn’t long before Nurmagomedov put Horcher on the mat. From there, it was “The Eagle” who dominated the action as he passed Horcher’s guard with ease, and landed brutal ground and pound. To Horcher’s credit, he survived the first round, but it was more of the same in the second. Nurmagomedov floored Horcher with a toss, transitioned into the mounted crucifix, and then to the back where he unloaded on a turtled Darrell Horcher. The ref had no choice but to rescue the UFC newcomer.

With that fight in the books, I’d really like to see Nurmagomedov get the next title shot. He has a win over the current title holder, and now that he’s healthy he has the strongest claim to the title. I hope we see Darrell Horcher get a good match up next as well. While he was outclassed againt Khabib, I have no doubt he could hang with the best of them with a proper camp.

Rose Namajunas Captures Hard-Fought UD over Torres

In an exciting, back-and-forth fifteen minutes, Rose Namajunas captured the unanimous decision victory over Tecia Torres. They are now 1-1 against each other, but beyond everything we saw how much each woman has improved since their first outting. Rose had success with a snappy, long-range jab, but Torres adapted and began chopping the legs. The most memorable moments of the bout came when a Torres left hook wobbled the legs of Rose in the clinch in round one. However, round two saw Rose press forward and land blitzing combinations against Torres. In the third round, a rather back-and-forth round ended with a Rose takedown which arguably sealed the deal. Regardless of the decision, both Rose and Torres solidified themselves as top 5 talent.

With this win, it’s not unreasonable to think Namajunas could be next in line for Joanna Champion’s 115 lb belt. Namajunas showcased some real smart awareness on the feet, but will need to learn how to avoid those leg kicks if she wants to survive on the feet with Joanna. Nevertheless, fantastic fight between two very technically-improved strawweights.

Glover Teixeira KOs Rashad Evans in Round 1

It didn’t last long, but it didn’t need to. A vicious left hook by Glover Teixeira put Rashad out in the first round of their main event bout. Early on, Glover immediately took the center of the Octagon and began pressuring Rashad. Evans had a few jabs and counters waiting for Teixeira, but ultimately got caught against the cage trying to circle and counter at the same time. Evans swung for the check hook while circling to the left, but stayed around a little too long to throw a right hand – running into the left hook by Teixeira. Big mistake to make against the heavy-handed Glover Teixeira. A few follow-up shots was all it needed to get the stoppage. Teixeira proceeded to respectfully call out “Rumble” Johnson in his post-fight interview. This sounds like a fantastic fight to make.
