Video: FIU Advances To Conference USA Quarterfinals On Half-Court Shot

Dennis Mavin had the shot of the day in the Conference USA tournament.

Florida International may have already provided the best finish to a conference tournament this season.

During the final moments of a closely-contested matchup, FIU’s Ray Rodriguez hit a free-throw to give the Golden Panthers a 54-51 lead with about eight seconds remaining. But then, UTSA’s Keon Lewis hit a three-pointer from the right wing with 3.0 seconds remaining to tie the game, which appeared likely to head into overtime.

Enter Dennis Mavin.

Mavin took the inbounds pass and put up a running shot from mid-court, with his defender looking to avoid contact. The shot banked in, giving the his team a 57-54 victory, and setting off a wild celebration for FIU, who advances to the Conference USA quarterfinals, where they’ll take on two-seed UTEP Thursday afternoon.
