The Volunteers Play the Bulldogs Behind the Hedges

The Tennessee Volunteers play the Georgia Bulldogs.

The Tennessee Volunteers and the Georgia Bulldogs get down to business on Saturday, October 1st at 3:30 p.m. ET on CBS. The Volunteers are -3 point favorites and the games total is notched in at 53.

The visiting Volunteers got things rolling in the second half against their nemesis, the Florida Gators. Both sides of the ball stepped up their intensity and it showed on the score board. Tennessee came away with a 38-28 come from behind win.

Georgia came back down to earth last week when they were manhandled at Ole Miss 45-14. It’s an overall performance that they would like to put behind them as soon as possible. The Bulldogs fell behind early and freshman quarterback Jacob Eason struggled to produce.

#11 Tennessee Volunteers (4-0):

Well it hasn’t been pretty but here we are going into Week 5 and the Volunteers are still undefeated. After several match-ups where Tennessee looked half-lost, it all came together against the Gators and the Florida’s 11 game winning streak was over. A huge reason they successfully dismantled the Gators in the second half was because of their quarterback Josh Dobbs.

Josh Dobbs went off for 319 yards passing and four touchdowns against a tough Florida defense. His totals now are 61 completions for over 800 yards and 10 touchdowns and five picks. He’s starting to turn the touchdown to interception ratio around to where it should be.

Tennessee still likes to run the ball more than toss it around. Jalen Hurd handles most of the duties, rumbling for 365 yards on 91 carries with two touchdowns. Josh Dobbs is a multi-dimensional player, and has contributed another 241 yards and four scores to the Volunteer’s total.

Wide receiver Josh Malone continues to put up impressive numbers. He has 13 catches for nearly 300 yards and five trips to the promised land. His teammate Jauan Jennings is good for another nine grabs for 142 yards and two touchdowns.

Despite being pushed around at times, the Volunteer defense has done okay. They only give up 21 points a contest, which is good for 37th in the country. Getting linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin back after his ejection in last weeks game for targeting will make the defense even stronger.

#20 Georgia Bulldogs (3-1):

It will be interesting to watch and see if Jacob Eason can bounce back after last week’s performance. He was the saving grace for the Bulldogs in their win against the Missouri Tigers but wasn’t near as sharp in last week’s performance. He now has totaled 780 yards and five touchdown tosses with three interceptions.

It’s pretty obvious what the Bulldogs want to do when you have Nick Chubb on your team. The Chubster has bounced back well in 2016 with over 430 yards and three end zone appearances. He is officially listed as questionable for this game. If he is out, Brian Herrien is the next man up. He has 184 yards with only 26 carries and three more scores.

Isaiah McKenzie has been a one man wrecking crew at the wide receiver position for the Bulldogs. Last week, he had 6 catches for 122 yards and a score. On the year, McKenzie has gathered in 21 balls for over 300 yards and five touchdown receptions.

The Georgia defense got taken to the woodshed last week by the Ole Miss offense. Before the third quarter barely was under way, the Rebels had laid 45 points on them. This group needs to figure things out in a hurry if that second half offense of Tennessee rolls up on them. Georgia ranks 84th in the nation allowing 30 points a game.

Trend and Notes:

The Volunteers are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 road games.

The Over is 4-1 in the Volunteers last 5 games following a straight up win.

The Under is 8-0 in the Bulldogs last 8 home games.

The Bulldogs are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 conference games.

Game Prediction:

The Tennessee Volunteers might have finally figured it out. The question is, after the momentous victory over the Gators, will they come out flat. Josh Dobbs looked like Josh Dobbs was suppose to look, the Volunteer defense responded in kind. Any way you slice it, they’re still undefeated.

The Georgia Bulldogs have been utterly confusing. They handled their business against a good Tar Heel club, holding Mitch Turbisky to 24 points. The following week they barely squeaked by Nicholls State 26-24. Thats right, Nicholls State! Georgia follows up those shenanigans with an impressive coming out party for Jacob Eason against conference foe Missouri. Then, once again, looked lost and befuddled as Ole Miss had their way with them.

Tennessee looks like they are headed in the right direction and have survived the inconsistent play that nobody expected from the in the first three weeks. Georgia chose to go with an inexperienced quarterback and appear to have duel-personalities.

Take the Volunteers to keep rolling off their second half performance and hope that Mr. Hyde shows up for the home team.

We suggest the Volunteers to cover the 3.
