Von Miller “Threatens” to Sit Out 2016-17 Season; 11 Rookies Still Unsigned

Miller makes his move with Instagram.

If there’s any light at the end of the tunnel in the contract negotiations between the Denver Broncos and outside linebacker Von Miller, it looked pretty dim today. Miller posted to his Instagram a message that was anything but cryptic.

I don’t understand his use of quotation marks here and he probably doesn’t either. Usually quotation marks utilized in this manner denote sarcasm, but I don’t think that’s what he was doing. Instead, Miller just sent a salvo back at Broncos general manager John Elway.

The deadline to sign the franchise tag is July 15, literally just a month away. All Elway has to do is up the guaranteed money and Miller signs. We all know he’s going to do it. We all know Miller deserves it. So why screw around?

Under the tag Miller would make $14.1 million this season, but he wants to sign long term and the Broncos want him long term. Miller told Cheslea Handler, of all people, he wants to be a Bronco for life.

“The franchise tag, it’s a one-year deal,” Miller told her. “I would like a little more stability. I want to be a Bronco forever. I just want the feeling to be the same from the Broncos.”

The deal the Broncos offered is a six-year, $114.5 million contract with only $39.8 million guaranteed. That’s significantly less than the amount of guaranteed money Justin Houston got from the Kansas City Chiefs and Fletcher Cox just got from the Philadelphia Eagles.

Would Miller really sit out the season? No. That’s why I used quotation marks in the headline. To denote sarcasm.

Why are so many rookies still unsigned?

New England Patriots third-round pick Jacoby Brissett finally signed his contract Thursday. It’s a four-year deal that could be worth $3.41 million that came with a $680,604 signing bonus. The deal is notable for two reasons. One, Brissett didn’t use an agent, but an adviser, so he’ll actually get to keep a lot more of this money. And two, how the hell are there still 11 rookies still unsigned? The draft was a month and a half ago.

There were 253 players drafted and 242 of them have signed contracts. And the only reason we’re down to 11 is because B.J. Goodson just signed with the New York Giants today too. Who isn’t signed? Well, I’ll tell you.

New York Jets: Darron Lee, first round pick out of Ohio State.

Cleveland Browns: Carl Nassib, third round pick out of Penn State and fourth round pick Joe Schobert out of Wisconsin.

Houston Texans: Will Fuller, first round wide receiver from Notre Dame.

Tennessee Titans: Keven Byard, third round pick from MTSU.

Oakland Raiders: Shalique Calhoun, third round pick out of Michigan State.

San Diego Chargers: Joey Bosa, first round pick out of Ohio State.

Dallas Cowboys: Maliek Collins, third round pick from Nebraska.

Green Bay Packers: Kenny Clark, first round pick out of UCLA.

San Francisco 49ers: First round pick Joshua Garnett from Stanford and third round pick Will Redmond from Mississippi State.

What’s the hang up with all these third round picks?

Wade Phillips finally got his Super Bowl ring. You can have one too

It took a few extra days, but Broncos defensive coordinator Wade Phillips finally got his Super Bowl ring with his actual name on it. I guess “Wade Peters” can just go kick rocks. I hope Phillips got to keep both of them.

Now that Phillips has his ring, you know who else needs one? You. That’s who.

Jostens is offering a replica of the Broncos Super Bowl 50 ring for the low, low price of just $5,299. They’re calling it the “Ultimate Broncos Fan Ring” and it contains 32 diamonds, is made from 10-karat white and yellow gold and will be the reason your kids can’t go to college.

For a slightly lower price you can get the cheap regular “fan ring” which will do nothing but shame whichever finger you put it on. Suck it up, “Broncos fan.” The new heat and air system can wait. You’ve got a Super Bowl ring to buy!
