WBSS Dorticos vs Gassiev SemiFinal Odds

Dorticos vs Gassiev

WBSS Dorticos vs Gassiev SemiFinal Odds – The World Boxing Super Series Cruiserweight tournament closes the semi-final round on Saturday as Murat Gassiev faces Yunier Dorticos.

Both men are undefeated world champions and both men advanced into the semifinals with early knockouts in the quarterfinal round. Gassiev holds the IBF world title at 200 pounds while Dorticos holds the WBA version meaning the winner will have unified two of the four major world titles in the weight class.

Awaiting the winner is Oleksandr Usyk, who united the WBO and WBC world titles last week with his semifinal win over Mairis Briedis in Riga, Latvia.

Dorticos and Gassiev is the fight with the closest line of the tournament so far. Dorticos comes with a wide amateur background representing Cuba and he has shown he has KO power in his pro career. His experience means fighting on the road is nothing new to him and he is confident that his technique is better than Gassiev’s. In the opening round of the WBSS he waxed Russian power-hitter Dmitry Kudryashov. He may not want to trade power blows with Gassiev in this one.

Gassiev may be slightly underrated as a boxer mainly because people see his bludgeoning power in both fists. Dorticos shows the Cuban tendency to eschew hooks for straight, point-scoring punches while Gassiev mixes in a better variety that includes more hooks and uppercuts. Most of what Gassiev throws is sent out with evil intent and his body work has a tendency to slowly kill. After all is said and done Gassiev’s biggest advantage may be his age, which is seven years younger than Dorticos at 24. By most measures, Gassiev has not even hit his prime yet and that is a scary thought. For his part, Dorticos has all that amateur background which certainly adds mileage and may work against him here.

The fight goes down as the main event of an eight fight boxing card promoted by Sauerland Events in conjunction with local promoters. Sauerland has been the driving force behind the WBSS tournaments and they deserve credit for running a tight ship.

The quarterfinals went down in the September and October timeframe last year and they are delivering the semifinal round in back to back weeks. Provided the winner of Gassiev vs Dorticos is not injured, Sauerland is promising to deliver the finals in May and they have a pool of “alternates.” That means they can deliver the tournament without delay if there is any type of problem. All four of the favorites advanced in the first round of the  tournament.

The WBSS comes with one major drawback and that is that the semifinals are not airing in the United States. When you consider that the tournament is expected to yield one world champion in the cruiswerweight division and that the field contained all top 10 fighters you realize we are talking about high level stuff here. Americans should not have to scour the internet to see these fights. Below are the odds for Dorticos vs Gassiev as well as some of the undercard fights.
