Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Jacksonville Jaguars Betting Preview

In this Sunday AFC matchup, Pittsburgh is tabbed as the favorite and is currently giving up 6 points. The Steelers are also receiving -230 moneyline odds while the Jaguars are +190. Vegas has set the over/under (O/U) at 47.5 points. If Pittsburgh gets behind early, it’ll likely create a decent in-game betting opportunity.

The Steelers have gained 3.0 units so far and are 6-3 against the spread (ATS). The team’s posted an Over-Under mark of 6-3. The disappointing Jaguars have lost 7.8 units this season. They’re 3-5-1 ATS and have an O/U record of 4-5.

The Steelers have gone 6-2-1 straight up (SU) in 2018 while the Jaguars are 3-6 SU.

Pittsburgh enters this contest on a zero-game winless streak while Jacksonville has won each of its last zero. The Steelers are coming off a resounding 52-21 victory over Carolina last week. Ben Roethlisberger completed 22-of-25 passes for 328 yards and five touchdowns. James Conner (65 yards on 13 rush attempts, one TD) led the ground attack while Antonio Brown (six receptions, 96 yards, one TD) and Vance McDonald (four catches, 44 yards, one TD) handled the receiving duties in the win.

Jacksonville narrowly dropped a 29-26 game to Indianapolis in Week 10. Blake Bortles completed 26-of-38 passes for 320 yards and two touchdowns. Leonard Fournette (53 yards on 24 rush attempts, one TD) spearheaded the running game as Dede Westbrook (five receptions, 30 yards) and Fournette (five catches, 56 yards, one TD) led the pass-catching attack in the loss.

Each of these squads has a similar (63-37 pass-to-run ratio on the season. The Steelers have rushed for 106 yards/game and have 12 touchdowns on the ground this year. The Jags are putting up 95 rushing yards per game and have three total rush TDs.

If the results so far this season can translate to this game, then the Steelers might be the more disruptive team in the trenches, as their offensive line has allowed just 24 sacks while the D-line registered 56 sacks. The Jaguars, on the other hand, have allowed 24 sacks and their defense has recorded only 55 sacks.

The Steelers offense has averaged 323 yards in the air overall and has 21 passing scores so far. The Jags have produced 278 pass yards per outing and have 13 total pass TDs.

Pittsburgh has allowed opponents to rush for an average of 91 yards and pass for 269 yards per game. The Jacksonville D has given up 215.4 yards per game to opposing passers and 118.6 yards per game on the ground. Both teams allow similar adjusted net yards per pass attempt (ANY/A) to the opposition, as the Steelers have given up an ANY/A of 6.08 to opposing QBs, while the Jags are allowing an ANY/A of 6.19.

Offensively, Roethlisberger is already up to 2,618 passing yards this year, and has connected on 216-of-322 attempts with 19 passing scores and seven interceptions. He has a pristine 7.85 adjusted net yards per pass attempt overall, although that number sits at 9.76 over the last two outings.

As a group, James Conner, JuJu Smith-Schuster and Antonio Brown have combined for 555 total yards and five touchdowns over the last couple of outings.

Blake Bortles has completed 177-of-287 passes for 2,055 yards, 11 TDs and eight INTs for Jacksonville. His ANY/A stands at 6.14 for the season and 7.77 over his past two games.

We expect the Jags to control tempo by pounding the defense with their running backs. Along with WR Donte Moncrief (423 receiving yards, three receiving TDs this season), T.J. Yeldon (339 rush yards, one rush TD, 314 receiving yards, four receiving TDs) and Leonard Fournette (124 rush yards, one rush TD, 75 receiving yards, one TD) have been significant factors in the Jaguars’ recent offensive strategies.
